INSIDE THE SHMATA FACTORY

INSIDE THE SHMATA FACTORY

Explore the hidden history of the Vineberg Building, built in 1912 by a Jewish garment – or shmata – manufacturer, and now home to the Museum of Jewish Montreal. Enter into an historical moment of rapid industrialization and massive immigration in the early twentieth century, as it happened on the corner of Duluth and St. Laurent. By walking the Vineberg’s halls, learning the details of the production process, and listening to workers’ stories, discover the choices Jewish, French Canadian, and other immigrant workers made as they interacted and sought common ground in this factory and on the picket line outside.
