PERMANENCE: 2020-21 Call for Exhibition Proposals

Deadline: December 15, 2019 at 11:59pm

About the Museum

The  Museum of Jewish Montreal (MJM) is an innovative place to connect with Montreal’s diverse Jewish life & heritage through new cultural experiences. Through multidisciplinary programming, our museum provides an accessible gateway to learn about and interact with Montreal’s Jewish culture, art and heritage while also enabling the public to share their stories and experiences.

Founded in 2010, our Museum’s activities include walking tours of historic Jewish neighbourhoods and buildings, online exhibits, oral history collection, public programming and exhibitions. In 2016, we opened a storefront project space that houses a gallery, boutique and food and event space where we host dozens of art, heritage and cultural events each year.

About the theme: Permanence

The 2020/2021 exhibition cycle at the MJM will be titled Permanence. The curatorial team invites artists to propose projects that respond to, play with, or pose inquiries in relation to this theme.

Suggested starting points for thinking about Permanence include, but are not limited to:

  • Ephemera / how do we collect to try to remember or establish permanence
  • Lack of permanence on Earth, death and dying
  • Changing tradition, culture, religion
  • Body modification
  • The Internet (link rot, impermanence of born-digital artworks)
  • Mediums that are permanent (or aren’t: undoing; changing; degrading)
  • (Im)permanence of identities (e.g.: gender, religion, nationality)
  • Relationships, roots, communities (the ties that bind us to people, places, things; or broken ties)
  • Impermanence; things that seem permanent but aren’t, or things that were never permanent
  • Topics related to psychology and mental health
  • Affiliations (political, national, religious); how our views change over time (or quickly)
  • The environment
  • Social change, Tikkun Olam/ Repairing the world
  • Barriers; seemingly insurmountable problems
  • Cultural markers (Historical narratives, monuments, intangible heritage, language)
