SUMMARY:Virtual Matzah Making Class
DESCRIPTION:Passover is right around the corner and we’ve heard from many of you that matzah is hard to find. Great news! We’re going back to our roots and making matzah at home – just like the Israelites did in Egypt – albeit with electricity and running water. After our hugely successful Montreal Bagel Workshop we’re having our second FREE virtual cooking class where we’ll guide you through the steps of making homemade matzah\, all while talking about the history of this iconic unleavened bread. The process is simple and easy to follow\, and we’ll be showing you how to make matzah with different kinds of flours to accommodate whatever you have in your pantry right now. There isn’t much advanced prep required! Just get the ingredients ready – we’ll be posing the ingredient list very soon – preheat your oven\, and you can make matzah right along with us. \nJoin us on Sunday\, April 5th from 3-4 pm on Zoom. Click here to register on Eventbright \nTo access the Zoom link\, please RSVP using the Eventbrite link above. The event is free and once you sign up\, you’ll be sent the link to access the virtual workshop.

SUMMARY:4 Glasses: A Tu B'Shevat Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Join us and the Wandering Chew for a Tu B’Shevat celebration! Tu B’Shevat literally translates as the New Year for Trees and is often seen as a day to honour and celebrate environmentalism. Although Tu B’Shevat falls in the middle of winter in Montreal\, it marks the beginning of the growing season in warmer climates. Kabbalists in 16th century Spain created the ritual of a Tu B’Shevat seder to celebrate the holiday\, which involved drinking four cups of wine and sampling an abundance of fruits and nuts. \nWe’re taking inspiration from this ritual but\, as we tend to do\, we’re putting a modern spin on it. Let’s celebrate by having Nick Hamilton\, a local sommelier\, lead us through a wine tasting of four glasses of natural wine: a white\, an orange\, a rose\, and a red. We’ll also have some nibbles that feature the seven species of biblical Israel (wheat\, barley\, grapes\, figs\, pomegranates\, olives\, and dates) that are traditionally eaten on Tu B’Shevat. To top it all off\, Aroma Jockey Jarome\, a perfumer and olfactory artist\, will be infusing the evening with sensational smells. \nTickets for this event are $45 including wine and nibbles\, and they can be purchased in advance here.

At this brunch\, the Wandering Chew will be making special dishes from the Syrian-Jewish and Turkish-Jewish communities to pay tribute to the musicians’ respective heritages. Dishes will be announced soon! \nBrunch will be held in three seatings\, from 10:00-11:30 AM\, 11:30 AM-1:00 PM\, and 1:00-2:30 PM. For reservations\, please call 514 840 9300 or email fletchers@imjm.ca. We will have a very limited number of drop-in seats. She started her music education at Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory when she was 11 years old. Having completed the Conservatory’s Kanun department\, she continued her training at the same university to receive her Bachelor’s Degree on composition in 1995. Her interest in examining the effects of art on society led her to complete a Master’s Degree on the musical analysis of Mevlevi Music at Marmara University. She gave lectures on Turkish music and kanun playing techniques at Haliç University Turkish music Conservatory and Istanbul University State Conservatory from 2001 until she moved to Canada in 2007. Her relocation to Montreal gave her the opportunity to reinterpret her music in this new environment whose vividness is the result of the turbulent convergence of manifold cultures flowing from different parts of the world. \nNazih Borish began to learn the oud by himself at the age of five\, listening to the music of many different cultures like flamenco\, jazz\, blues\, Indian music\, etc. He began working as an oud player in popular music bands at the age of thirteen. He created a new style of oud playing\, always pushing back the limits of this instrument. In 2005\, Nazih founded the Syrian Oud School in his hometown\, Lattakia\, and got more than 100 students who now work as musicians. In 2016\, Nazih moved to Montreal where he continues his musical work with friends and a new family of musicians.

After studies in classical western music\, jazz and electro-acoustic composition\, he soon after devoted himself to maqam music. He has directed and co-directed many groups devoted to maqam music. He also is a proficient free improviser and has performed with groups he co-founded and with many different musicians. A key aspect of his musical work is the theoretical and practical use of “heterophony.” He has written\, given talks and published articles on the subject and has released one practical aspect (a CD) of it: Studies in Heterophonics\, an album of ‘natural’ generative music. Since 2013\, he is the organizer/curator of ‘Dogaçlafest’\, an Istanbul based festival devoted to improvised music. He co-founded the Istanbul-based collective of multidisciplinary artists nü.kolektif (2009-2014). In 2015\, he co-founded the Montreal-based Thought Experiment Productions\, a multidisciplinary production company dedicated to the production of performances with political content using research in social sciences as a methodological framework. \nJean-Philippe Reny is a self-taught musician specializing in oral-tradition music\, modal music\, and improvisational music. For more than a decade\, he has been involved in many projects relating to these interests: Les Productions Strada (Traditional band music\, Greek Rebetiko music\, Medieval and Mediterranean music)\, Djoumbush (Turkish music)\, ESEM: Ensemble Séfarade et Méditerranéen (Sephardic songs)\, d’escabeaux collective (American folk music\, improvisation project)\, and Chansons de Provence (poems by Miquéù Montanaro\, music by Liette Remon and improvisation). Mr. Reny has studied the oud and Turkish music since 2002\, first with Guy Ross (Ensemble Anonymus\, Strada\, Constantinople and Prof. of lute Performance at Université Laval)\, and then with Roby Parker (student of the Turkish master Necati Çelik) and Nicolas Royer (co-founder of Djoumbush\, who has studied and lived in Turkey for many years\, and is very active on Istanbul’s musical scene). Mr. Reny has been heard on several recordings and radio broadcasts by\nRadio-Canada and the CBC. He has performed in many countries throughout Europe and North America. He has several times been the recipient of grants from the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts.
