DESCRIPTION:***This event has been postponed\, we will update the event date once it has been rescheduled.*** \nThe Museum of Jewish Montreal is thrilled to present the first event of our 2020 Microgrants Program – “Games I Don’t Want to Play” by Joseph Glaser and Michelle Soicher! \n“Games I Don’t Want to Play” is an immersive performance piece about Our Lives\, Anxieties\, and Experiences as Contemporary Jews\, the Game!™. This show makes real how we are required to fragment our own identity to fit into the myriad experiences of our lives. We constantly have That Voice that asks: Which Jew should I be in this situation? How much of my everyday life can I show to my friends\, family\, synagogue group\, or strangers on the street. How does one inhabit these spaces that require\, so often\, to deny aspects of ourselves in order to be accepted? Now\, That Voice is the referee in a cage match between us and our anxiety. \nWe’ll be playing two games: \nRound 1: “Am I Getting Clocked?” The Hand Game! \n~ a song and dance intermission! ~ \nRound 2: The Coping Olympics \nGames have set rules and goals and they have set consequences. Our games are unfair\, there’s no way to win them\, you just kind of do them. Like the glass at our weddings\, these games are broken\, mournful\, and joyous\, and hey\, TRADITION! \nNO AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION REQUIRED \nCome see us play as hard as we can for as long as we can. \nWHEN: Thursday\, March 19 from 7pm to 9pm\, PWYC\nWHERE: Museum of Jewish Montreal\, 4040 blvd. St-Laurent \nArtist Biographies:\nDescribed as “a voice to watch out for” by CBC’s Bill Richardson\, Joseph Glaser’s music creates space for performers and audiences alike to have out-of-the-ordinary experiences. Having had many years of training as a dancer\, Joseph looks at composition with a choreographic eye leading to pieces that are as much about physical movement as they are about sound. Joseph holds degrees from McGill University and the University of British Columbia. Notable performances include premieres by the McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble\, Caution Tape Sound Collective\, the Gryphon Trio\, the Amici Chamber Ensemble and a one-act opera with FAWN Chamber Creative. \nMichelle Soicher\, originally from Toronto\, moved to Montreal to explore all aspects of theatre making at Concordia University and since graduating she has been fortunate to collaborate with both established and emerging artists. Michelle is an alumni of the Black Theatre Workshop Artist Mentorship program and The Segal Centre’s Jewish Artist Mentorship program. Being queer and Jewish\, Michelle has a unique perspective of being an invisible minority and aims to create space for stories that have been pushed to the margins. Her creative practice is rooted in Jewish traditions of debate. Currently focusing on directing and dramaturgy\, Michelle believes that theatre should be theatrical and saturated with play\, imagination and a little discomfort. She is excited by pulling audiences from a passive to an active state. She recently directed Teesri Duniya’s production of Birthmark alongside Liz Valdez and a staged reading of Quiet for Black Theatre Workshop’s Discovery Series. \n********* \nThis microgrant program for creative or cultural exploration is a new collaboration between the Museum of Jewish Montreal and Moishe House Montreal\, providing seed funding to help young adults bring their innovative project ideas to life. By offering this funding\, we hope to give applicants the chance to pursue their interests and realize their ideas while encouraging intellectual curiosity and community building. Her work is highly conceptual and complex\, incorporating cultural archetypes and iconography with satirical narratives inspired by the collective unconscious and the human condition. The vivid and provocative still imagery emerges through an entirely cinematic technique\, with Dina’s established methodology following a precise pre- to post production process. Leaning into the visual language of pop surrealism\, she stages narrative compositions that expose the underbelly of modern life\, challenging the notions of cultural influence and inherent belief systems.

Daniel Ooreand Irene Oore\, creatively and critically examining trauma\, its transmission\, and its transcendence. This event explores elements in Irene’s book The Listener: In the Shadow of the Holocaust\, (2019)\, from which she and her son will also read and reflect upon. Throughout the evening Daniel will also perform music\, improvisations\, original compositions\, soundscapes\, and more. SUMMARY:4 Glasses: A Tu B'Shevat Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Join us and the Wandering Chew for a Tu B’Shevat celebration! Tu B’Shevat literally translates as the New Year for Trees and is often seen as a day to honour and celebrate environmentalism. Although Tu B’Shevat falls in the middle of winter in Montreal\, it marks the beginning of the growing season in warmer climates. Kabbalists in 16th century Spain created the ritual of a Tu B’Shevat seder to celebrate the holiday\, which involved drinking four cups of wine and sampling an abundance of fruits and nuts. \nWe’re taking inspiration from this ritual but\, as we tend to do\, we’re putting a modern spin on it. Let’s celebrate by having Nick Hamilton\, a local sommelier\, lead us through a wine tasting of four glasses of natural wine: a white\, an orange\, a rose\, and a red. We’ll also have some nibbles that feature the seven species of biblical Israel (wheat\, barley\, grapes\, figs\, pomegranates\, olives\, and dates) that are traditionally eaten on Tu B’Shevat. To top it all off\, Aroma Jockey Jarome\, a perfumer and olfactory artist\, will be infusing the evening with sensational smells. \nTickets for this event are $45 including wine and nibbles\, and they can be purchased in advance here.

DESCRIPTION:Presentation and Discussion with the Author Michael Blum \nModeration: Sonja Finck \nMichael Blum’s book Oranienstraße Ausgrabungen\, Eine Verschronik tells the story of a building in Berlin-Kreuzberg\, Oranienstrasse 10/11\, and the life of the Baum family from the middle of the 19th century until today. Everything begins as in a fairy tale: A man and a woman\, born on the same day\, fall in love with each other and have five sons over the next two decades. We follow the lives of their descendants from integration to persecution and exile to Rome\, Haifa\, Buenos Aires and Washington DC. \nEmbedded in a web of other narratives – the architectural history of the building\, the social history of Berlin\, Kreuzberg’s alternative and protest culture\, housing feudalism and gentrification\, the Jewish sports club Bar Kochba and the development of muscular Judaism – and related historical figures such as Max Nordau\, Folke Bernadotte\, Konrad Zuse or Aras Ören\, we follow the voice of the author-cum-researcher to the present day. \n  \nDue to limited space\, registration is recommended \nEntrance to this event is free \n  \n\nMichael Blum is an artist\, author\, and professor at the École des arts visuels et médiatiques\, Université du Québec à Montréal\, Canada. DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us on at the Museum of Jewish Montreal to celebrate the Montreal debut of Jonathan Rotsztain’s Patterns installation. Following our Self-Loving Jew comic making workshop with Jonathan Rotsztain\, the Museum will be open to the public to meet the artist behind our newest window projection\, and see some of the comics produced through his comic making workshop.  \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nCash bar at fletchers \nArtist\, writer\, and cartoonist Jonathan Rotsztain’s visual narratives assert a contemporary\, cultural Jewish identity. Patterns is born out of Rotsztain’s autobiographical Self-Loving Jew comic series – which reclaims the “self-hating Jew” trope and honours Jewish tradition from a contemporary and intersectional perspective. Built around a triptych of self-portraits and a projected decorative-arts-inspired pattern\, Patterns subverts the traditional sequential comic format\, presenting itself as a non-linear collection of experiences where distance disappears and time becomes almost circular. \nIn daylight\, the series of life-size figures outwardly present moments of celebration\, reflection and torment\, which result from the cycle of processing identity\, privilege and inherited trauma. After sundown\, a motif of the artist’s neuroses appears\, much like subconscious fears emerging in dreams. This pattern mirrors textiles used for household items like curtains or wallpaper—used to adorn while camouflaging stains. It invites a closer inspection\, revealing thorny foliage evocative of a family tree\, intertwined with totems of Jewish cultural heritage (challah loaves\, tablets of the covenant\, hamsas\, serpents\, and Leonard Cohen’s unified hearts). \nThe vermiculated foliage surrounds oblong vignettes. Depictions of recurring childhood nightmares\, stirred by his grandparents’ experiences in the Holocaust\, are contrasted with dreams of longing for a sense of home and rootedness. Other depictions include the artist embracing a Havdalah candle\, which acts as the beam between scales–where icons of colonial-settler Canadiana are outweighed by a mound of earth with a tobacco plant. The artist clings to his Jewish immigrant heritage while adapting to contemporary secular values\, and acknowledging the complexity of rebuilding a life from the ashes of genocide in a country which is still working towards reconciling the erasure of Indigenous peoples’ presence and contributions. Rotsztain ultimately reveals his many faces through examining the inconspicuous root causes of inherited patterns of behaviour and thinking. \n  \n– About Jonathan Rotsztain’s “Self-Loving Jew” comic series – \nJonathan Rotsztain’s “Self-Loving Jew” comic series asserts a contemporary\, cultural Jewish identity. She has participated in artist residencies at Artscape Gibraltar Point\, SIM International Artist Residency (Iceland)\, and MUSE (Montreal). Her work can be found in private collections in Canada\, the US\, Germany and England\, the City of Edmonton\, the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers\, The David Melul Jewish Museum\, and El Ayuntamiento de Bejar. \nAbout Emma Haraké\nEmma Haraké is a visual artist\, educator and researcher who also collaborates on curatorial projects. She holds a Master’s in art education from Concordia University and a BFA from the Lebanese University. Her work considers the complexities of participatory processes\, questioning conventions of the researcher/educator as main author. Her research interests include autobiographical and arts-based inquiries\, memory work\, and oral history. Emma has years of work experience in various cultural\, academic\, and community settings and locates her work within collaborative and community-based practices. \nAbout Return to the Fortress\nIn 2019\, Gladstone was invited by the David Medul Jewish Museum and the City of Bejar\, Spain –the town from which her Sephardic ancestors were expelled over 500 years ago —to produce a body of work exploring themes related to diaspora\, belonging\, and mythologies of home. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Museum of Jewish Montreal (MJM) proudly presents: Return to The Fortress by Julie Gladstone\, featuring a series of abstract portraits and landscapes which draw from medieval Sephardic iconography\, ancient legends\, and the native flora of Béjar\, Spain. \nDuring a recent residency and solo exhibition hosted by the David Melul Jewish Museum in the medieval village of Béjar\, Spain\, Gladstone was given an opportunity to explore her Sephardic family’s roots and a legacy of diaspora that has lasted since her family’s expulsion from the town of Béjar in 1492 during the Spanish Inquisition. Following this experience\, the artist is pleased to present an interdisciplinary body of work that considers the mythology of homeland and connection to ancestry. \nReturn to The Fortress —the first installment of the MJM’s 2019-2020 exhibition series Inside/Out— combines abstract painting and personal narrative to explore themes of identity\, belonging\, and reconciliation. By depicting motifs of protection and camouflage in her work\, Gladstone’s disguises reveal as much as they hide. Drawings\, textile work\, and an installation altarpiece further explore intersections between personal and ancestral healing\, and the duality of home as both physical place and internal space. \n  \n[slide-anything id=”35539″] \n  \nJulie Gladstone is a Canadian artist currently based in Toronto. Holding a BFA from Concordia University (Montreal)\, Gladstone has had solo exhibitions at Walnut Contemporary\, Navillus Gallery\, GN Contemporary\, Museo Judio David Melul de Béjar\, and her work has been included in group exhibitions across Canada and the US\, receiving media attention from CBC Arts\, The Guardian\, Toronto Life and Notable. \nGladstone is currently an MFA Candidate in the Interdisciplinary Studio Arts program at OCADU\, and is the recipient of the Artscape Award (2014)\, the CSCE Emerging Artist Award at the Art Gallery of Alberta (2016). She has participated in artist residencies at Artscape Gibraltar Point\, SIM International Artist Residency (Iceland)\, and MUSE (Montreal). Her work can be found in private collections in Canada\, the US\, Germany and England\, the City of Edmonton\, the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers\, The David Melul Jewish Museum\, and El Ayuntamiento de Bejar. \nIn 2019\, Gladstone was invited by the David Medul Jewish Museum and the City of Bejar\, Spain –the town from which her Sephardic ancestors were expelled over 500 years ago —to produce a body of work exploring themes related to diaspora\, belonging\, and mythologies of home. \n————————— \nThe Museum of Jewish Montreal is an innovative place to connect with Montreal’s Jewish life and identify\, share our diverse heritage\, and create new cultural experiences. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with our current exhibition\, Iraqi Jewish Voices\, join the Wandering Chew on October 17th for a hands-on cooking workshop\, during which you’ll get to learn how to make Iraqi-Jewish delicacies! \nThe cuisine of the Iraqi-Jewish community is one full of fragrant spices and a variety of culinary influences.  During this workshop\, we’ll teach you how to make two of our favourite Iraqi-Jewish dishes: curried chickpea-filled sambusak served with amba\, and cardamom and rose-perfumed massafan cookies. \nTickets will cost $25 and can be purchased in advance here.

DESCRIPTION:Please note that this tour has been cancelled due to inclement weather. We thank you for your understanding\, and will be offering our special Red Light Walking Tour again in the spring! \nJoin us in welcoming Karen Herland for a special walking tour of Montreal’s historic Red Light District! \nSex work\, especially in its most visible forms\, tends to be recognized as a problem\, requiring intervention and eradication. As a major transportation hub and port city\, many sectors of Montreal’s economy were intertwined with the sex trade\, even as police and politicians manipulated social responses (positive and negative) to the presence of a thriving Red Light District. From Maimie Pinzer to Harry Ship and through to the present day\, this tour explores the social\, economic\, labour\, cultural\, racial\, and gender history of Montreal through its former Red Light\, which for decades thrived in the heart of Montreal’s burgeoning Jewish community. \nThis tour covers 150 years and 10 city blocks over 1.5-2 hours. The tour begins on the southeast corner of Boulevard René Lévesque and Boulevard St. Laurent and ends near St. Laurent metro station. The tour will be taking place in English. \nTickets are $21 general admission and $10 for students. She began researching the history of Montreal’s Red Light District after working as coordinator for Stella\, a community development organization for sex workers in Montreal.

DESCRIPTION:Join us this fall for a series of 8 beginner or 8 intermediate Yiddish classes at the Museum\, led by experienced Yiddish teacher Sheila Witt! Explore this Jewish language and culture through basic vocabulary\, short stories\, poems\, expressions\, and well-known songs\, and learn how to lead a simple conversation! \nClasses will begin on October 16th\, and the first two classes will be held on Wednesday evenings (October 16 and October 23). Following this\, the remainder of the classes will be held on Monday evenings\, from October 28h – December 2nd. DESCRIPTION:Join us and POP Montreal in welcoming curator and cultural producer Regine Basha (NY) for Tuning Baghdad\, an evening of audio-visual archival exploration\, live music\, and Iraqi treats! \nIn conjunction with our upcoming exhibition\, Iraqi Jewish Voices\, Regine Basha will present her personal audio-visual archive of music and story-telling\, recounting Jewish Baghdad’s music scene from the 1940s and the diasporic musical life of some of Baghdad’s last Jewish residents. \nThe presentation will be followed by live music from invited local musicians\, who will be playing a repertoire of some popular Iraqi songs from the ’40s as well as other Middle Eastern favourites. The website features the last sessions of Iraqi-Jewish musicians like Abraham Salman\, as well as vintage films of ‘chaglhi’ house parties and discussions about the history of the Iraqi music scene; the six-episode radio show shares popular and ceremonial music and includes interviews with current Iraqi Maqam musicians. The live presentations bring these elements together in an intimate setting and offers to connect the dots\, often with a live music component. She holds degrees from New York University and from the Center for Curatorial Studies\, Bard College. As the daughter of an Iraqi-Jewish emigré\, Sol ‘Silman’ Basha\, who played the oud and the kamanja at countless house parties in Montreal\, Los Angeles\, and New York\, Regine (Gina) Basha is herself neither a musician nor a specialized ethnomusicologist\, but considers herself a music enthusiast and witness to a community that blends Arabic and Jewish cultures. \nTuning Baghdad is dedicated to Sol Basha (1925-2017).
