SUMMARY:Build-A-Bubbie: Sculpture Workshop with Jonah Strub
DESCRIPTION:When someone mentions glamour\, who is the first person in your own life that you think of? If your first thought was your Jewish mother or grandmother\, this workshop is for you! \nPop culture has a veneration for Jewish woman. The tropes and stereotypes of Jewish women\, especially mothers and grandmothers are wildly influential in the worlds of musical theatre\, television\, movies\, and drag. Jewish women\, both actors and characters\, in many of these examples are the embodiment of camp. Think of Barbra Streisand\, Bette Midler\, Fran Drescher\, and Michelle Visage. These women\, many of them bubbies\, are the epitome of camp\, glitz\, and theatricality. \nIn celebration of the final week of our exhibition Shtetl in the Sun\, join us for a hands-on workshop by artist and sculptor\, Jonah Strub. In this 3-hour workshop\, participants will be provided plasticine clay and many embellishments including (but not limited to) glitter\, rhinestones\, and feathers to sculpt and photograph your own glamorous grandmother or any person of your choice. Your sculptures can be based on someone in your life or be entirely fictitious\, as long as they are extremely glamourous. We hope to celebrate the chic and dazzling legacy of Bubbies with you all! \nPrior to the workshop\, Jonah will take participants on a brief guided tour of the exhibition\, showing the process behind his own sculptures on view. \nTickets are $40 each or $35 for students. All materials included. Capacity is limited\, so reserve your spot early to avoid disappointment. Click here to reserve your spot. \nJonah Strub (b. 1996) is a Toronto-based gay\, Jewish artist with a primary focus on sculptural ceramics. Jonah’s work is a love letter to camp\, kitsch\, musical theatre\, Yiddish humour\, and drag\, and explores his own femininity through the humour of traditionally queer and Jewish aesthetics. Jonah explores themes like glamorous grandmothers\, cutesy creatures\, and sublime self-portraiture in his work. Jonah often superimposes his face on his creations\, paired with over-the-top patterns and exuberant\, joyful imagery\, to celebrate himself as a fully realized kitsch object. \nJonah holds a BA in Studio Art from the University of Guelph\, specializing in oil painting and sculpture\, and discovered ceramics during an exchange in Bremen\, Germany in 2019 where he immediately fell in love with the medium. He earned a certificate in Cartooning and Illustration from George Brown College in 2022. In 2023\, he participated in the Banff Emerging Artist in Residence Program. Jonah has exhibited around Canada and abroad including The Canadian Clay and Glass Museum\, Art Gallery of Burlington\, The Artist Project\, and galleries in Germany and the USA. Jonah is one of two featured artists in Shtetl in the Sun\, currently on view at the Museum of Jewish Montreal until June 1. \nAccessibility: Please note that the upper levels of our building are not accessible to visitors with limited mobility. This workshop will take place on the first floor which is accessible from our main entrance via ramp. The exhibition is on the second and third floor\, accessible by stairwell.

SUMMARY:Red Light Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Back for another season\, join us for a tour of Montreal’s historic Red Light District with Karen Herland! Come learn about this storied district in a walk through its landmarks and alleyways. \nSex work\, especially in its most visible forms\, tends to be recognized as a problem\, requiring intervention and eradication. As a major transportation hub and port city\, many sectors of Montreal’s economy were intertwined with the sex trade\, even as police and politicians manipulated social responses (positive and negative) to the presence of a thriving Red Light District. From Maimie Pinzer to Harry Ship and through to the present day\, this tour explores the social\, economic\, labour\, cultural\, racial\, and gender history of Montreal through its former Red Light\, which for decades thrived in the heart of Montreal’s burgeoning Jewish community. \nThis tour covers 150 years and 10 city blocks over 1.5-2 hours. The tour begins on the southeast corner of Boulevard René Lévesque and Boulevard St. Laurent and ends near St. Laurent Metro station. \nPlease note that while the tour will be led in English\, questions can be asked and answered in French. \nThis tour will be offered on June 25\, July 23\, and August 28. When purchasing your ticket\, please be sure to select it for the date you wish to attend. Tickets are valid only for the chosen date of purchase. \nClick here to reserve your spot. \nPoint of Departure: We will meet on the southeast corner of Boulevard René Lévesque and Boulevard St. Laurent. Please ignore the specific address of 1111 Boulevard St. Laurent\, as this is only an approximation. \nKaren Herland is an author\, independent researcher and educator\, currently teaching at Concordia University in the Interdisciplinary Program on Sexuality Studies and Fine Arts. She published People\, Potholes and City Politics: A Guide to Municipal Politics in Montreal in 1994 with Black Rose Books. Karen began researching the history of Montreal’s Red Light District after working as coordinator for Stella\, a community development organization for sex workers in Montreal. Her research interests include cultural studies\, urban space\, sexuality studies\, media and community mobilization. \nWeather Policy: In the event of light rain\, the tour will go on as scheduled. If there is a strong warning of heavy rain and/or thunderstorms\, the tour will be postponed. All registrants will have the option to attend the rescheduled tour. 1944. SUMMARY:Song/Book: A Multimedia Yiddish Musical Performance
DESCRIPTION:On June 26th\, join us with micrograntee Alexandra Gorlin-Crenshaw for Song/Book\, a live performance piece that intertwines music\, puppetry arts\, handmade artist books\, and Yiddish folk songs. \nFollowing the performance\, there will be time for discussion\, questions and an up-close look at the books and puppets! Part performance\, part exchange of ideas\, this event is suited for all who are curious about Yiddish music and Yiddish-inspired artworks. The audience will be invited to immerse themselves in the sounds and images\, an expressive world containing echoes of their own stories and experiences. \nSong/Book is a developing performance of Alexandra’s arrangements of Yiddish folk songs\, haunting vocals\, and handmade artist books and crankies.* She sings melodies old and new\, accompanied by her prerecorded piano arrangements\, recorded voice layered into a choir\, or a capella. Each song is integrally linked to its respective book and crankie\, and Alexandra manipulates them in time to the music\, with shadows and puppets moving across the pages. A live camera and projector enlarge the miniature books and subtle movements into wall-sized projections\, creating both an intimate and immersive performance. \n* A crankie box is an illustrated scroll\, wound onto two spools and set inside a wooden frame. Common in 19th century folk arts\, crankies were popular prior to the advent of cinema\, and provided visual accompaniment to songs\, poems\, or stories.  \nDoors open at 7:00pm. Performance begins at 7:30pm. A discussion and Q&A will follow. \nAdmission is free and space is very limited\, due to the intimate nature of this style of performance. Advanced registration is encouraged. Click here to reserve your spot. \nAlexandra Gorlin-Crenshawworks at the intersection of music and puppetry arts\, drawing on her training as a soprano\, composer\, and pianist\, and honing new skills along the way. Her work gravitates towards themes of heritage\, memory\, ritual\, and belonging\, with moments of suspension that create an altered sense of time or place. In her performances you may find original music and texts\, folk songs\, lieder\, self-accompanied opera arias\, projections\, shadow theatre\, handmade puppets\, artist books\, and crankies. Thanks to support from the Conseil des arts et lettres de Québec\, the Foundation for Yiddish Culture\, and the Canada Council for the Arts\, Alexandra’s current projects include The Ghosts at My Address (2024)\, for two pianists and their voices\, premiered in Soundstreams’ “Keyed-Up” Festival in Toronto; Ava’s House (forthcoming 2027)\, for soprano and toy theatre box; and Songs That Shan’t Be Named\, for four soprano-dancers\, body percussion\, and shadow theatre. \nAccessibility: Please note that the upper floors of our building are currently not accessible to visitors with limited mobility. This event will take place on the ground floor\, which is accessible via ramp from our main entrance. \nThis event is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s 2025 Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, made possible with support by the Azrieli Foundation\, the Betty Averbach Foundation\, and CANVAS.

SUMMARY:Postcards from Montreal: A Three-Part Linocut Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This three-session workshop introduces participants to the art of linocut\, an expressive and accessible printmaking technique. Linocut allows artists to carve designs into linoleum blocks and print them repeatedly\, creating bold images full of texture and contrast. \nWith the theme Postcards from Montreal\, participants will be encouraged to reinterpret the city’s postcard-worthy views and symbols. Inspiration can come from classic Montreal icons — the Old Port\, bridges\, parks\, the classic Montreal staircases or even the Farine Five Roses sign — as well as places tied to the city’s Jewish history and culture. These might include Synagogues\, the Bagg Street Shul\, the historic Back River Cemetery\, well-known Jewish businesses and street corners\, or something personal that represents the city for you. \nOver the course of three 3-hour sessions\, participants will be guided step by step through the process: sketching and transferring an image\, carving\, and finally printing. Each session builds on the last\, with opportunities to experiment\, refine\, and reprint\, so participants can see their ideas evolve from first draft to a finished edition. \nThe workshop emphasizes both technique and creative exploration. Participants will learn practical skills — such as safe carving\, preparing ink\, and operating a printing press — while also discovering how linocut can be a form of personal and cultural expression. \nBy the end of the workshop\, each participant will take home their own carved linoleum block (which can be reused for future prints) along with a collection of original prints created during the sessions. All tools and materials will be provided. \nRegister Here \n  \nAbout the Instructor \nDamián Birbrier is a saxophonist\, composer\, and multidisciplinary artist whose work bridges music\, visual arts\, and community engagement. Born in Buenos Aires\, Argentina and raised in Brazil\, he draws on a rich cultural background that informs his creative practice\, which is centered on improvisation\, collaboration\, and collective creation. \nIn recent years\, Damián has designed and facilitated numerous workshops that blend artistic exploration with social connection. In 2022\, he led a series of group workshops at Club Ami in Montréal\, using collective music compositions\, images\, and video as tools for creativity and dialogue. He has also developed music improvisation workshops tailored especially for amateur musicians. \nExpanding beyond music\, in 2023 and 2024 he introduced participants to linocut and printing press techniques through hands-on workshops at the Museum of Jewish Montreal\, where participants explored both the craft and the collective experience of making art. \nBy drawing on his versatility as both musician and visual artist\, Damián embraces a polyvalent approach to artistic practice. His workshops foster exchange across disciplines and invite participants to discover new ways of expressing themselves.

SUMMARY:Red Light Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:For the last time this season\, join us for a nighttime tour of Montreal’s historic Red Light District with Karen Herland! Please note that while the tour will be led in English\, questions can be asked and answered in French. \nClick here to reserve your spot. \nTICKETS:\nAdults: $26\nAges 65+: $24\nStudents: $14\nAges 12 and Under: $8 \nPoint of Departure: We will meet on the southeast corner of Boulevard René Lévesque and Boulevard St. Laurent. Please ignore the specific address of 1111 Boulevard St. Laurent\, as this is only an approximation. \nWeather Policy: In the event of light rain\, the tour will go on as scheduled. If there is a strong warning of heavy rain and/or thunderstorms\, the tour will be postponed. All registrants will have the option to attend the rescheduled tour.

SUMMARY:Aguas: Time and Memory | A Jazz Concert with Damián Birbrier and Guests
DESCRIPTION:On January 8\, please join the Museum of Jewish Montreal at Casa del Popolo with Damián Birbrier and guests for a concert that weaves memory into improvised soundscapes. \nAs a continuation of the project previously presented in Aguas: Dialogues Through Improvised Music\, this new jazz concert opens a deeper chapter in the exploration of sound\, space\, and the passage of time. Aguas: Time and Memories focuses on the traces that linger within us: memories inherited\, forgotten\, or rediscovered\, and how they resurface through improvised music. \nFor this new edition\, the ensemble expands into a quartet\, bringing together: Damián Birbrier (saxophones)\, Vovô Saramanda\, (percussion)\, Manoel Vieira (piano and accordion)\, and Antoine Rochefort (bass). \nThis new configuration offers a wide and fluid sonic palette\, allowing the music to move between intimate textures\, open landscapes\, and dense collective improvisations. Each performance emerges spontaneously from shared listening\, personal histories\, and the atmosphere of the room\, creating a space where time feels elastic and memory becomes sound. \nListeners are immersed in a living soundscape\, engaging with the music as it takes shape and reveals its unexpected contours. \nAdvance tickets $16. Door tickets $20. Doors at 7:30pm. Performance at 8:00pm. Capacity is limited so early registration is encouraged. Reserve your ticket here. \nAccessibility: This event will take place offsite at Casa del Popolo (4873 boul. Saint-Laurent). This venue is accessible via ramp from the main entrance. \nAbout the Performers: \nBorn in Buenos Aires to a Brazilian mother and a Jewish Argentinean father\, saxophonist\, improviser\, and composer Damián Birbrier was raised in the lush countryside of Southcentral Brazil. He began his musical journey within the vibrant tradition of local marching bands and popular rhythms. \nBorn in Salvador de Bahia\, Brazil\, in 1954\, Vovô Saramanda is a dynamic artist who blends the roles of singer\, songwriter\, and percussionist. After moving to Montreal in 1980\, he became a trailblazer at the city’s International Jazz Festival and contributed significantly to Cirque du Soleil’s iconic show O. \nManoel Vieira is a jazz and classical composer and pianist. He is known for his versatility\, versatility and artistic plurality. Holds a PhD in jazz piano from Laval University in Canada and a master’s degree in classical piano from the Federal University of Bahia in Brazil. Manoel Vieira works regularly in several music schools in Quebec and as a professor at the University of Montreal. \nAntoine Rochefort is a Montreal-based bassist\, composer\, and performer who draws inspiration from the various musical styles he loves to create his own personal language. Always in search of new sources of inspiration\, his music is infused with jazz\, soul\, Latin music\, and funk\, played on a variety of electric basses and double bass. \nThis event is presented as a part of the Montreal Jewish Arts Collaborative (MJAC) granting initiative\, made possible through the support of the Averbach Family Foundation\, CANVAS\, and the Azrieli Foundation.
