This walk will delve into the history and evolution of Montreal’s once thriving garment industry\, spanning over a century. A special focus will be given to the life and work of Léa Roback (1903-2000)\, a pioneering union organizer\, social activist\, pacifist\, and feminist in 20th century Québec. \nThis tour will begin at Ethel Stark Park\, and will take approximately 2 hours. SUMMARY:Postcards from Montreal: A Three-Part Linocut Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This three-session workshop introduces participants to the art of linocut\, an expressive and accessible printmaking technique. Linocut allows artists to carve designs into linoleum blocks and print them repeatedly\, creating bold images full of texture and contrast. \nWith the theme Postcards from Montreal\, participants will be encouraged to reinterpret the city’s postcard-worthy views and symbols. Inspiration can come from classic Montreal icons — the Old Port\, bridges\, parks\, the classic Montreal staircases or even the Farine Five Roses sign — as well as places tied to the city’s Jewish history and culture. These might include Synagogues\, the Bagg Street Shul\, the historic Back River Cemetery\, well-known Jewish businesses and street corners\, or something personal that represents the city for you. \nOver the course of three 3-hour sessions\, participants will be guided step by step through the process: sketching and transferring an image\, carving\, and finally printing. Each session builds on the last\, with opportunities to experiment\, refine\, and reprint\, so participants can see their ideas evolve from first draft to a finished edition. \nThe workshop emphasizes both technique and creative exploration. Participants will learn practical skills — such as safe carving\, preparing ink\, and operating a printing press — while also discovering how linocut can be a form of personal and cultural expression. \nBy the end of the workshop\, each participant will take home their own carved linoleum block (which can be reused for future prints) along with a collection of original prints created during the sessions. All tools and materials will be provided. \nRegister Here \n  \nAbout the Instructor \nDamián Birbrier is a saxophonist\, composer\, and multidisciplinary artist whose work bridges music\, visual arts\, and community engagement. Born in Buenos Aires\, Argentina and raised in Brazil\, he draws on a rich cultural background that informs his creative practice\, which is centered on improvisation\, collaboration\, and collective creation. \nIn recent years\, Damián has designed and facilitated numerous workshops that blend artistic exploration with social connection. In 2022\, he led a series of group workshops at Club Ami in Montréal\, using collective music compositions\, images\, and video as tools for creativity and dialogue. He has also developed music improvisation workshops tailored especially for amateur musicians. \nExpanding beyond music\, in 2023 and 2024 he introduced participants to linocut and printing press techniques through hands-on workshops at the Museum of Jewish Montreal\, where participants explored both the craft and the collective experience of making art. \nBy drawing on his versatility as both musician and visual artist\, Damián embraces a polyvalent approach to artistic practice. His workshops foster exchange across disciplines and invite participants to discover new ways of expressing themselves.

DESCRIPTION:For the last time this season\, join us for a nighttime tour of Montreal’s historic Red Light District with Karen Herland! Come learn about this storied district in a walk through its landmarks and alleyways. \nSex work\, especially in its most visible forms\, tends to be recognized as a problem\, requiring intervention and eradication. As a major transportation hub and port city\, many sectors of Montreal’s economy were intertwined with the sex trade\, even as police and politicians manipulated social responses (positive and negative) to the presence of a thriving Red Light District. From Maimie Pinzer to Harry Ship and through to the present day\, this tour explores the social\, economic\, labour\, cultural\, racial\, and gender history of Montreal through its former Red Light\, which for decades thrived in the heart of Montreal’s burgeoning Jewish community. \nThis tour covers 150 years and 10 city blocks over 1.5-2 hours. The tour begins on the southeast corner of Boulevard René Lévesque and Boulevard St. Laurent and ends near St. Laurent Metro station. DESCRIPTION:Please join the Museum of Jewish Montreal (MJM) and the Concordia Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies for an artist talk and workshop with visiting artist Yevgeniy Fiks. \nThis masterclass will be led by New York-based artist\, author\, and co-creator of the Yiddishland Pavilion at the Venice Biennale\, Yevgeniy Fiks. The class will begin with a lecture and artist talk from Yevgeniy\, speaking about his inspiration and approaches as an artist\, teacher\, and curator\, and the influence of Yiddish and diasporic Jewish discourse in contemporary artistic practice. \nPhoto: Yevgeniy Fiks\nAfter a short break to connect further with other participants over coffee and refreshments\, Yevgeniy will lead participants through a drawing workshop connected to his exhibition on view\, Dos Baushtibl. \nInspired by the “Basic Course” at the Bauhaus—the influential Modernist art school in interwar Germany\, this workshop will explore the foundations of Yiddish visual arts in relation to Yiddish and Jewish literature. Engaging in hands-on projects\, participants will investigate the possible meanings of visual art concepts such as “Yiddish Line\,” “Yiddish Shape\,” and “Yiddish Color\,” and gain a new appreciation for interdisciplinarity and bringing historical approaches into contemporary practice. \nAll levels of artistic experience are welcome\, and no prior knowledge of topics or techniques is required. \nTickets are $5 for students and $8 for general admission. DESCRIPTION:Want to feel cozy and prepare for Hanukkah festivities at the same time? \nOn Sunday December 14th\, join local artisan Sheryl Shore of Mile-End Soap & Candle Supply for an afternoon of beeswax candle dipping in the spirit of Hanukkah. Guests will be guided through standard candle dipping methods as they each create 8 individual shamash candles for their hanukkiah lighting rituals. During the workshop\, Shore will also provide context on candle-making\, the life of bees and wax production\, and her personal experiences with the craft. No prior experience required! \nParticipants do not need to celebrate Hanukkah\, and alternate candle-making options are available: candle sticks\, birthday candles\, etc. are encouraged as well! \nTickets are $25. DESCRIPTION:On January 8\, please join the Museum of Jewish Montreal at Casa del Popolo with Damián Birbrier and guests for a concert that weaves memory into improvised soundscapes. \nAs a continuation of the project previously presented in Aguas: Dialogues Through Improvised Music\, this new jazz concert opens a deeper chapter in the exploration of sound\, space\, and the passage of time. Aguas: Time and Memories focuses on the traces that linger within us: memories inherited\, forgotten\, or rediscovered\, and how they resurface through improvised music. \nFor this new edition\, the ensemble expands into a quartet\, bringing together: Damián Birbrier (saxophones)\, Vovô Saramanda\, (percussion)\, Manoel Vieira (piano and accordion)\, and Antoine Rochefort (bass). \nThis new configuration offers a wide and fluid sonic palette\, allowing the music to move between intimate textures\, open landscapes\, and dense collective improvisations. He began his musical journey within the vibrant tradition of local marching bands and popular rhythms. \nBorn in Salvador de Bahia\, Brazil\, in 1954\, Vovô Saramanda is a dynamic artist who blends the roles of singer\, songwriter\, and percussionist. After moving to Montreal in 1980\, he became a trailblazer at the city’s International Jazz Festival and contributed significantly to Cirque du Soleil’s iconic show O. \nManoel Vieira is a jazz and classical composer and pianist. He is known for his versatility\, versatility and artistic plurality. Holds a PhD in jazz piano from Laval University in Canada and a master’s degree in classical piano from the Federal University of Bahia in Brazil. SUMMARY:How Does a Poem Become Music? A Composition Workshop with Rona Nadler
DESCRIPTION:In this two-part workshop\, songwriters and composers will be guided in the creation of a new musical setting of a poem of their choice by a Jewish Montreal poet. \nThroughout the workshop\, the group will explore how poetry and music work together across a variety of languages and musical genres\, while also analyzing individual poems and compositions. This workshop is geared toward participants who are comfortable singing and/or playing an accompanying instrument; who may or may not have written some songs before; and who are interested in pushing their boundaries and trying something new! \n$50 per person. Due to the limited capacity of this workshop\, advanced registration is strongly encouraged. Click here to register. \nAbout the Instructor: \nThe workshop will be led by Rona Nadler\, a versatile musician who loves engaging with the sounds\, rhythms\, and meanings of text in a variety of languages. Her original pieces set lyrics by modern Yiddish poets Kadya Molodowsky\, Esther Shumiatcher and Itsik Manger\, as well as the eighteenth-century poetess Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. Her music draws on influences from classical\, folk\, popular\, and cantorial styles\, and has been performed by numerous ensembles in the Montreal area\, including Ensemble ArtChoral\, Les Rugissants\, La Chorale Harmonia\, and the Ottawa Choral Society. \nIn addition to composing\, Rona has performed with an array of ensembles in the Montreal area as a vocalist\, harpsichordist\, vocal coach and music director. She has toured the United States and Canada as a member of the Juno-nominated quartet Infusion Baroque\, while also serving as artistic director of the chamber choir One Equall Musick and the Blue Dawn Quartet. Rona is on faculty in Early Music Area of the Schulich School of Music\, and also serves as Music Director and Cantorial Soloist at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom in Westmount\, Quebec. \nWorkshop Session Overview: \nSession 1 – January 11th \nThrough listening and guided discussion\, we will explore different parameters for how music and lyrics can interact. According to given guidelines\, we will each create a setting of the same short poem\, and share our results. We will also read through our individual poems together and begin to conceive our compositions. \nSession 2 – January 18th \nWe will spend the first part of the session doing improv activities together. We will also do a round robin in pairs to get feedback and inspiration for our individual compositions. A linguist by training and an expert in plain language communication\, she is passionate about bringing Yiddish to a wider audience. \nEli Benedict is a scholar\, artist\, and activist for Yiddish. He grew up in a Hasidic community in Israel and studied in yeshivas and kollels. Today\, Eli serves as the CEO of “Yung Yidish\,” the Yiddish Museum in Tel Aviv. He also serves as the program director and recruitment at the League for Yiddish. He is part of a research team at UCL (university College London) that studies Hasidic Yiddish and Ashkenazi Hebrew. Eli’s research interests include Ashkenazi culture\, Hasidic culture\, Yiddish\, and Jewish dance. SUMMARY:Windows to the Soul: A Painted Glass Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What do we see in ourselves and our histories when we hold them up to the light?  \nIn 1962\, celebrated Jewish painter Marc Chagall’s 12 Tribe Windows were installed in the Abbell Synagogue at the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem\, each arched stained-glass window was painted by Chagall to represent one of Jacob’s 12 sons and what their respective tribe symbolizes. \nIn this FREE workshop with Merav Epstein\, we’ll be emulating Chagall’s process to make mini tribe windows to represent ourselves or our loved ones. This workshop will start with a short presentation on Chagall’s practice as a painter and how he moved into stained glass\, as well as a quick history on stained glass within Judaism and in Montreal. Participants will then brainstorm and sketch out ideas for what their own “tribe” window will look like\, what aspects they wish to represent\, before diving in on painting their own window (6″ x 8″). \nNo prior painting or stained glass experience is required. All materials will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring along any objects of importance to them that they may want to depict in their window. Come solo or with friends or family. DESCRIPTION:On March 26\, join us for a book launch and artist talk with MJM microgrant recipient Levana Katz. \nBy the tips of your fingers\, for the palm of your hand\, is a book by Levana Katz that explores how cultural memory informs place. It examines the personal and communal significance of Mezuzot\, an archive of letters between her parents\, and her family’s passage through Montréal. Combining handbinding\, risograph and inkjet printing\, and her mother’s calligraphy alongside her own\, the book is a tactile\, interactive work that draws on inherited cultural traditions. \nKatz will discuss her process for making this book\, touch on its themes\, and share some of her family’s archival materials that went into its production. Following the talk\, Katz will lead a bilingual audience Q&A. Guests are encouraged to mingle and see up-close some of the objects that inspired the contents of the book. \nA limited run of copies of By the tips of your fingers\, for the palm of your hand will also be on sale on a first-come\, first-served basis. DESCRIPTION:As part of the Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival\, we are delighted to invite you to a reading and workshop with New York-based Jewish poet\, academic\, feminist\, and activist Irena Klepfisz alongside local author and poet Madelaine Caritas Longman. \nThe event will commence with a reading by Klepfisz from her collection of poetry\, as with her award-winning Yiddish-English bilingual poem di rayze aheym / The Journey Home. A child survivor of the Holocaust\, this poem reflects Klepfisz and her mother’s return visit to Poland in 1983 and Klepfisz’s reckoning and reclamation of a destroyed Polish Yiddish culture and language. Themes of estrangement\, diaspora\, and belonging will be explored across the poems. Interwoven throughout the readings will be a conversation with Longman\, offering guiding context and reflection for our listeners. \nFollowing the reading\, Klepfisz will lead guests through a writing workshop inspired by her poem di rayze aheym/The Journey Home which asks participants to consider the idea of “home.” This will be an opportunity to read a curated selection of related poetry gathered together by Klepfisz\, including her own work\, and engage in inspiring dialogue with a pioneer in the rediscovery of Yiddish women writers. \n$20 per person. Irena Klepfisz taught Jewish Women’s Studies at Barnard College for 22 years. She is the author of five books of poetry including Her Birth and Later Years: New and Collected Poems\, 1971-2021 (winner of the 2023 Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry; finalist for a 2023 National Jewish Book Award)\, Periods of Stress\, Keeper of Accounts\, Different Enclosures\, A Few Words in the Mother Tongue\, and a collection of essays Dreams of an Insomniac. She is one of the foremost advocates of the Yiddish language and its renaissance in the United States. Her work has appeared in Tablet Magazine\, The Manhattan Review\, The Georgia Review\, In Geveb\, Sinister Wisdom\, The Current\, and Languages of Modern Jewish Cultures. \nMadelaine Caritas Longman‘s poetry collection\, The Danger Model (McGill-Queen’s University Press\, 2019)\, won the Quebec Writers’ Federation Concordia University First Book Prize and was longlisted for the Fred Cogswell Award for Excellence in Poetry. SUMMARY:Yiddish II: Spring/Summer 2026
DESCRIPTION:This course aims to improve students’ fluidity in written and spoken Yiddish. Using authentic texts and other media\, students will become familiar with a range of Yiddish dialects and registers while gaining a more sophisticated knowledge of its grammar. Students will learn how to understand and express more complex ideas using a broader range of vocabulary and grammatical tools. They will also learn about Yiddish culture and the lived experiences of Yiddish speakers around the world. \nThe course will be taught through a mix of direct instruction\, inquiry-based learning and immersion in the target language. Students should come to class prepared to listen\, share\, ask questions and take risks in order to gain confidence in their growing mastery of Yiddish. \nPrerequisites: A good knowledge of the alef-beys and basic knowledge of Yiddish grammar. \nCourses run weekly each Wednesday from May 6 to June 24\, from 5:15pm to 7:15pm.  \nRegistration is $220 per person. Click here to reserve your spot. \nAbout Our Teacher: \nZoë Belk is a researcher\, editor and translator living on the South Shore of Montreal. She has taught Yiddish at McGill University and a number of summer schools. Her research focuses on Contemporary Hasidic Yiddish and developments in Yiddish in the last 70 years. A linguist by training and an expert in plain language communication\, she is passionate about bringing Yiddish to a wider audience. \nAccessibility: Please note that our building is not currently accessible to visitors with limited mobility. SUMMARY:Mother's Day Paper Flower Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Mother’s Day and Shavuot are just around the corner! Join us to celebrate with a paper flower crafting activity at H. Fisher & Fils. \nTo kick off the celebrations\, children and their adult companions are invited to join our staff for a themed craft activity at our current location: the old H. Fisher & Fils sewing accessories store. Children will be encouraged to create a paper flower bouquet that can serve as a Mother’s Day card\, gift\, or even a home decoration for Shavuot! \nAfter the activities\, kids and families will be invited to explore the H. Fisher shop and complete a scavenger hunt introducing them to all the different “notions” that go into costume and fashion design. \n$10 per child\, $5 per adult. All materials provided.
