This March Break\, children and their adult companions are invited to join us for crafts at our current location: the old H. Fisher & Fils sewing supply store. \nFrom paper pirates to cardboard golems\, join us as we fold newspapers\, cut-up boxes\, and encourage hands-on creativity. $10 per child and $5 per adult. SUMMARY:By the tips of your fingers\, for the palm of my hand: A Book Launch and Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:On March 26\, join us for a book launch and artist talk with MJM microgrant recipient Levana Katz. \nBy the tips of your fingers\, for the palm of your hand\, is a book by Levana Katz that explores how cultural memory informs place. It examines the personal and communal significance of Mezuzot\, an archive of letters between her parents\, and her family’s passage through Montréal. Combining handbinding\, risograph and inkjet printing\, and her mother’s calligraphy alongside her own\, the book is a tactile\, interactive work that draws on inherited cultural traditions. \nKatz will discuss her process for making this book\, touch on its themes\, and share some of her family’s archival materials that went into its production. Following the talk\, Katz will lead a bilingual audience Q&A. Guests are encouraged to mingle and see up-close some of the objects that inspired the contents of the book. \nA limited run of copies of By the tips of your fingers\, for the palm of your hand will also be on sale on a first-come\, first-served basis. All proceeds will go towards Katz. Price: $40/each or PWYC. \nAdmission is free but capacity is limited\, so early registration is strongly recommended. Reserve your spot. \nLevana Katz is an interdisciplinary artist based in Tiohtià:ke / Mooniyang (Montréal). She holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University. Levana creates multimedia installations\, primarily working across material processes such as drawing\, printmaking\, and fibre arts. Her work has been shown in several galleries in Montréal\, including Arprim\, Ada X and the Fofa Gallery. In 2023\, Katz moved to St. John’s\, Newfoundland to pursue the Don Wright Scholarship at St. Michael’s Printshop where she exhibited her first solo show\, Where the Ground Remembers You Twice. As the recipient of the Prix Albert Dumouchel\, Levana was granted a residency at L’imprimerie\, which she completed in 2025. Currently\, Levana works as an art educator at the Visual Arts Centre\, and is creating an artist book supported by a microgrant from the Museum of Jewish Montreal. \nAccessibility: Please note that the upper floors of our building are currently not accessible to visitors with limited mobility. SUMMARY:Passover Programming: Afikoman Cover Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Come and get ready for Passover by creating your own Afikoman cover (matzah cover) with Montreal-based seamstress Helen Frank. \nUsing upcycled fabrics and linens\, participants will learn how to hand sew\, embroider\, and decorate their own Afikoman cover (matzah cover). The workshop will start with an embroidery lesson by Helen\, who will be there to support you throughout and answer any questions as you create your special piece. All fabrics will be provided\, as well as beads\, embroidery floss\, and other accoutrements\, making your cover the perfect opportunity to add a personal flair to the passover seder table. \nNo prior sewing experience is necessary\, and all levels are welcome. Due to the sewing supplies being used\, this event is recommended for ages 12 and up. \n$30 per person. All materials provided. Reserve your spot. \nHelen Frank has been sewing professional for 7 years and privately for 22. She combined her love of sewing and her passion for environmentalism when starting her business\, La Fixerie Couture (First known as “Helen Mends”). Helen repairs textiles\, alters clothing\, and has a line of products made from upcycled fabrics to replace disposable items. She would be happy to answer all your mending questions through her Instagram or website. \nAccessibility: Please note that our H. SUMMARY:Candle Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, April 26\, please join us with local artisan Sheryl Shore of Mile-End Soap & Candle Supply for an afternoon of beeswax candle making. \nFocused on havdalah candles – a multi-wick candle traditionally used to mark the end of Shabbat – this workshop will guide participants through every step of the process. Guests who do not celebrate Shabbat are of course welcome to create regular taper candles\, birthday candles\, or candles significant to a practice of their own. During the workshop\, Sheryl will also provide context on candle making\, the life of bees and wax production\, and her personal experiences with the craft. No prior experience required! \nTickets are $30 per person. All necessary materials provided. Due to limited capacity\, advanced registration is encouraged. Reserve your spot. \nAbout Sheryl:\nLured by the intoxicating aroma of beeswax\, Sheryl Shore began dipping candles 25 years ago. Shore is committed to valourizing the work of bees who create the wax\, and brings a modern take on the ancient craft. SUMMARY:CANCELLED – The Journey Home: A Poetry Reading and Workshop with Irena Klepfisz and Madelaine Caritas Longman
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this event has unfortunately been CANCELLED. \nAs part of the Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival\, we are delighted to invite you to a reading and workshop with New York-based Jewish poet\, academic\, feminist\, and activist Irena Klepfisz alongside local author and poet Madelaine Caritas Longman. \nThe event will commence with a reading by Klepfisz from her collection of poetry\, as with her award-winning Yiddish-English bilingual poem di rayze aheym / The Journey Home. A child survivor of the Holocaust\, this poem reflects Klepfisz and her mother’s return visit to Poland in 1983 and Klepfisz’s reckoning and reclamation of a destroyed Polish Yiddish culture and language. Themes of estrangement\, diaspora\, and belonging will be explored across the poems. Interwoven throughout the readings will be a conversation with Longman\, offering guiding context and reflection for our listeners. \nFollowing the reading\, Klepfisz will lead guests through a writing workshop inspired by her poem di rayze aheym/The Journey Home which asks participants to consider the idea of “home.” This will be an opportunity to read a curated selection of related poetry gathered together by Klepfisz\, including her own work\, and engage in inspiring dialogue with a pioneer in the rediscovery of Yiddish women writers. \n$20 per person. Click here to reserve your spot. \nAbout Our Guests: \nA trailblazing lesbian poet\, child Holocaust survivor\, and political activist whose work is deeply informed by socialist values\, Irena Klepfisz is a vital and individual American voice. Irena Klepfisz taught Jewish Women’s Studies at Barnard College for 22 years. She is the author of five books of poetry including Her Birth and Later Years: New and Collected Poems\, 1971-2021 (winner of the 2023 Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry; finalist for a 2023 National Jewish Book Award)\, Periods of Stress\, Keeper of Accounts\, Different Enclosures\, A Few Words in the Mother Tongue\, and a collection of essays Dreams of an Insomniac. She is one of the foremost advocates of the Yiddish language and its renaissance in the United States. Her work has appeared in Tablet Magazine\, The Manhattan Review\, The Georgia Review\, In Geveb\, Sinister Wisdom\, The Current\, and Languages of Modern Jewish Cultures. \nMadelaine Caritas Longman‘s poetry collection\, The Danger Model (McGill-Queen’s University Press\, 2019)\, won the Quebec Writers’ Federation Concordia University First Book Prize and was longlisted for the Fred Cogswell Award for Excellence in Poetry. Her poems have appeared in PRISM international\, The Ex-Puritan\, Vallum\, Room\, Grain\, and elsewhere. In 2025\, she was awarded the Joseph S. Stauffer Prize in Literature. SUMMARY:Yiddish II: Spring/Summer 2026
DESCRIPTION:This course aims to improve students’ fluidity in written and spoken Yiddish. Using authentic texts and other media\, students will become familiar with a range of Yiddish dialects and registers while gaining a more sophisticated knowledge of its grammar. Students will learn how to understand and express more complex ideas using a broader range of vocabulary and grammatical tools. They will also learn about Yiddish culture and the lived experiences of Yiddish speakers around the world. \nThe course will be taught through a mix of direct instruction\, inquiry-based learning and immersion in the target language. Students should come to class prepared to listen\, share\, ask questions and take risks in order to gain confidence in their growing mastery of Yiddish. \nPrerequisites: A good knowledge of the alef-beys and basic knowledge of Yiddish grammar. \nCourses run weekly each Wednesday from May 6 to June 24\, from 5:45pm to 7:15pm.  \nRegistration is $220 per person. She has taught Yiddish at McGill University and a number of summer schools. Her research focuses on Contemporary Hasidic Yiddish and developments in Yiddish in the last 70 years. SUMMARY:Hasidic Montreal Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:On May 28\, join us for a fascinating glimpse into Montreal’s Hasidic community through Outremont and the Mile End. \nFormerly the home to the vast majority of Montreal’s Jews in the first part of the twentieth century\, today\, the leafy neighbourhood hosts dozens of Hasidic groups and their synagogues. Led by Steven Lapidus\, this tour will illuminate Montreal’s Hasidic history through a tour of its institutions. \nReserve your spot here. \nPlease note that this tour will be offered in French. English tours will be added later this season. \nSteven Lapidus\, PhD is a Montreal-based scholar of the history of Orthodox Judaism\, with a focus on North American Hasidism. A former co-curator at the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre\, he has published articles and book chapters in both English and French on Canadian Jewish history and the Hasidic experience in Canada. As a long-time resident of Mile-End\, his current professional engagements involve working with the borough of Outremont on improving communal relations. \nPoint of Departure: We will meet at the northeast corner of Waverly and Fairmount (approximate location: 5201 rue Waverly) at 5:30pm\, and will conclude at Parc Saint-Viateur. \nWeather Policy: In the event of light rain\, the tour will go on as scheduled. If there is a strong warning of heavy rain and/or thunderstorms\, the tour will be postponed. All registrants will have the option to attend the rescheduled tour.
