SUMMARY:Take Care of Yourself For Me: An Amulet-Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What gives talismans their protective power? And how do they shape our relationships to people and place?  \nThese sentimental objects can help us find one another\, and keep us safe on the way – but today\, the majority of Jewish amulets and jewellery are mass-produced\, with the universal taking priority over the local and personal. In this event we’ll be taking the creative process back into our own hands. \nJoin us for an amulet-making workshop with micrograntee and Judaica designer Mika Benesh. Starting with a group exploration of our relationships to talismans\, participants will work together to create protective amulets for one another using jeweller’s modelling wax\, which will then be cast 1:1 in sterling silver and yours to keep. No prior jewellery-making experience is required. Come solo or with a loved one. \nIn this local and intimate setting\, we’ll be particularly attentive to the experiences and needs of marginalized people\, and the ways we already know how to find and take care of each other by making meaning and joy. \nParticipants are encouraged (but not obligated!) to bring along any protective talismans\, amulets\, or objects of theirs they feel comfortable\, as well as any texts\, blessings or stories they hold close– they don’t necessarily have to be Jewish either. Hybrid experiences\, practices\, identities and cultures are most welcome. \nDue to very limited capacity\, early sign-ups are encouraged. Click here to reserve your spot. \nABOUT MIKA: \nMika Benesh is a designer-researcher working between unceded Gadigal + Dharug Country and Tiohtià:ke in the australian and canadian colonies. Broadly speaking\, they trace relations between cultural institutions and archives\, Jewish material cultures\, queer / trans lives & movements\, white supremacy and settler colonialism. As well as writing\, they work with metal\, graphite\, textiles\, and interactive digital media. Across their practice\, Mika is interested in catching a small hold of many Jewish futures. Currently\, they’re undertaking a Judaic Studies MA at Concordia University. \nThis workshop is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, which is funded by the Quebec Community Group Network’s Community Innovation Fund. We also thank the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal (JCF) for their support.

SUMMARY:Intricate Intimacies: A Papercutting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:How might certain materials be created and used to orient ourselves in domestic and ritual space?\nHow can something as commonplace as paper perform as a designation of place in nurturing a sense of ‘home’? \nIn response to our ongoing exhibition Public Intimacy\, we invite you to an interactive workshop that will delve into the Jewish folk art tradition of papercutting. With artist and researcher Iso E. Setel\, participants will learn about the significance of this delicate art form\, from its religious uses in homes and synagogues\, to numerous contemporary practitioners who are reviving the medium. \nFollowing a discussion on the relationship between the art and history of papercutting and its interwoven themes within Public Intimacy\, participants will be invited to create a papercut work of their own\, either from a historical sample that they may trace\, or from their own imagination. By the end of the workshop\, everyone will be able to take home a finished or in-progress papercut. \nTickets are $17 for general admission and $12 for students\, plus applicable taxes. All materials will be provided. Complimentary and beverages will be available. Early registration is encouraged as capacity for this workshop is limited. \nAbout Iso:\nIso E. Setel is a filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist based in Montreal / Tiohtiá:ke since 2017. Utilizing moving images\, text\, and textiles\, their work addresses questions of visibility\, sense and memory in documentary film and installation. Their work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Canada\, most recently as part of IGNITION ’16 at the Leonard & Bina Ellen Gallery in 2020. Originally from Buffalo\, New York\, Iso received a BA in Political Studies and Electronic Media Arts from Simon’s Rock in 2017\, and an MFA in Film Production from Concordia University in 2021. \nPlease note that at the moment\, the upper levels of our building are unfortunately inaccessible to visitors with limited mobility. Although the workshop will take place on the ground level\, the walkthrough of the exhibition will take place on the upper floors.

SUMMARY:BLACK OX ORKESTAR – EVERYTHING RETURNS – ALBUM LAUNCH
DESCRIPTION:Everything Returns reconvenes the original Black Ox Orkestar lineup after a 15-year hiatus. Arising from the fertile Montréal post-punk scene of the early 2000s\, the band comprises Scott Gilmore\, Jessica Moss and Thierry Amar of Thee Silver Mt. Zion (Amar also continues to compose and play bass for Godspeed You! Black Emperor) and Gabriel Levine of Sackville. Black Ox made two acclaimed albums of roiling acoustic avant-folk in the mid-2000s\, exploring Eastern European and North African folkways through the lens of a gritty\, atmospheric indie rock sensibility\, juxtaposing interpretations of instrumentals from various Jewish\, Romani\, Balkan and Arabic traditions with originals led by Gilmore’s politically-charged Yiddish vocals. These early albums have since become lodestars for many among a new generation of Yiddish\, Klezmer and radical Jewish music practitioners and fans.\n\nThe new Black Ox Orkestar album picks up right where the band left off: a sublime\, poetic\, politically-informed statement of re-energized Jewish diasporic musical intent\, where Gilmore’s voice and the band’s simmering arrangements conjure an ardent\, doleful balladry that also echoes the sound and style of artists like Tindersticks\, The National\, Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. Everything Returns is a haunting\, richly textured\, darkly sparkling song cycle at once from a vanished world and very much of our time and place.

SUMMARY:Der Eydes Volume II Launch with Cesario Lavery
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Museum of Jewish Montreal and Librairie Drawn & Quarterly with artist and author Cesario Lavery for a launch of the second volume of Der Eydes (The Witness). \nPicking up after Volume I’s breathless discovery of an old Kafka volume belonging to Dr Chaim Shatan\, Der Eydes Volume II dives into the mystery of parentage and origin – Dr Shatan’s\, and the author’s father’s. Both a meditation on the unknowable and a determined investigation into the past\, this next instalment of Der Eydes is about family and belonging. \nJoin author Cesario Lavery for a talk on genealogical research and writing about families – one’s own\, and others. Following Cesario’s discussion and reading from Volume II\, we will open up the floor for a moderated Q&A session from our guests. Both volumes of Der Eydes will be available for sale (Volume I: $10\, Volume II: $15) at the venue. \nClick here to reserve your free tickets. \nPlease note capacity for this event is limited so early registration is encouraged. Also note that the Museum’s upper floors are currently not accessible to visitors with limited mobility. To protect the safety of Museum staff\, guests\, and event facilitators\, we strongly encourage the wearing of masks or face coverings to this event. \nWe acknowledge the support of the Canada Council of the Arts for supporting the development of this project.

SUMMARY:ART CHORAL Romantique with Ensemble vocal Arts-Québec
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum of Jewish Montreal in welcoming the renowned choral group Ensemble vocal Arts-Québec for an intimate concert in our new space featuring 19th century choral music by Jewish composer Salomone Rossi. \nExquisite European choral music from the 19th century is framed by two psaum settings by Rossi\, who composed and printed a large set of motets for use in synagogues in Hebrew during the 17th century. While his music is modern in his day\, through the lens of their choral compositions the 19th century\, composers looked back to the longstanding musical tradition of their musical predecessors. As a result\, this concert will cross the barriers of time and brings out the fascinating similarities and differences between composers like G.Verdi\, P.I. Tchaikovsky\, F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy\, Johannes Brahms and others. Led by chef de chef de chœur Matthias Maute\, this concert will be one not to be missed. \nDoors at 7:00pm. Show begins at 7:30pm. General admission seating on a first come\, first served basis. Click here to purchase your tickets.  \nThank you Mécénat Musica donors for having made this possible! Ensemble vocal Arts-Québec is supported by the Azrieli Foundation for the project ART CHORAL Coast to coast to coast. \nPlease note that the upper floors of our building are not currently accessible to guest with limited mobility.

SUMMARY:Imagining a Queer Eruv: A Walking Conversation
DESCRIPTION:On October 19\, join us for an autumn edition of imagining a queer eruv: a walking conversation with artist and researcher Iso E. Setel. Starting at Parc St-Viateur in Outremont\, this guided conversation will take us through the Mile End by way of the neighbourhood’s back alleys and looping paths. Along the walk\, Iso will be sharing their research and the work that went into creating their book\, Eruv: Queer Installations of Jewish Space\, while inviting attendees to reflect upon and share their experiences in queer and Jewish spaces within and beyond Montreal. \nThis walking conversation and its associated book examine the ways in which eruvin function as queer objects\, dissolving distinctions between the public and the private\, and reconditioning spatial relations. Eruv collages together text\, photography\, and paper-cut maps of ritual terrains to articulate how eruvin might be utilized as ritual technology in projects of queer liberation and community formation. \nTo coincide with our ongoing exhibition Public Intimacy – which explores similar themes as Iso’s book – the tour will end at the Museum of Jewish Montreal at 5220 boul. St-Laurent\, where visitors will be invited to view the exhibition and consider overlapping concepts. \nTickets are $23 for General Admission and $12 for Students\, plus applicable taxes. \nClick here to reserve your spot.  \nPlease note that this is the third presentation of this event and capacity is limited\, so we encourage early registration to avoid disappointment. Copies of Eruv: Notes on Queer Installations of Jewish Space will be available for purchase at the end of the walking portion\, $5 or pay-what-you-can. Proceeds from book sales will be donated to projects that support queer youth in Montreal. Books are also available to those who are unable to attend. Email Iso at iso.setel@gmail.com to request a copy.  \nAbout Iso: \nIso E. Setel is a filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist based in Montreal / Tiohtiá:ke since 2017. SUMMARY:The Brine Project
DESCRIPTION:Join interdisciplinary artist Simone Lucas and the Museum of Jewish Montreal for a fish tasting session and presentation of work-in-progress. The Brine Project asks how odorous\, pickled fish brine could be remediated as a multimedia video installation. While Simone was traveling in Lodz\, Poland on a family heritage trip\, a tour guide shared a story: in a pre-war fishmongers’ market\, herring brine soaked so deeply into the ground that the smell of fish persisted for a decade after the war. In this tale\, brine becomes a unique agent of memorialization. This project investigates how brine and video-as-brine could preserve stories about fish and Jews\, leaving material and non-material traces such as smell along the way. \nSimone will present work in progress and lines of inquiry on fish preservation\, inviting questions and contributions from participants. Pickling fish is integral to Simone’s artistic research. The audience will have an opportunity to smell and taste home-preserved fish and learn about the pickling process. All will be invited to share the memories and sensations these foods evoke. Vegan options will be provided. \nAttendees are kindly asked to wear masks for the duration of the event\, except while consuming food. \nCost: Attendees are invited to contribute a voluntary cash donation at the door. A limited amount of pickled fish will be available for sale. \nEvent Accessibility: The event space is wheelchair accessible. It will take place indoors\, in a large room with high ceilings. We would be grateful if you contact us ahead of time for any specific accessibility needs. \nAbout Simone:\nSimone Lucas (she/hers & they/them pronouns) is an interdisciplinary video artist\, educator\, and community activist of Jewish Ashkenazi descent\, a white settler based in Tio’tia:ke/Mooniyang (aka Montreal). \nSimone’s educational background integrates cultural studies and media production. She has an MA in Media Studies from Concordia University with scholarships from the FQRSC and SSHRC.  \nSimone creates with video\, multimedia installation\, sound\, and performance. Their non-fiction film\, I Think About You Every Day\, takes a feminist\, autobiographical approach by drawing on Their personal archive of correspondence with a friend. Politically grounded art and research is also a core part of Simone’s practice. Relationships to social movements inform their guiding principles in artistic processes. \nThis event is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, which is funded by the Quebec Community Group Network’s Community Investment Fund.

SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Bagels: Tasting Montreal and New York's Best
DESCRIPTION:Montreal and New York are known for their countless contributions to Jewish food and culture. Their bagels – though sometimes a point of competition between the two cities – stand out as delicious symbols for generations of Jewish migration\, settlement\, and imagination. A Tale of Two Bagels: Tasting Montreal and New York’s Best will be a unique opportunity to learn about\, explore\, and – most importantly – to sink our teeth into the legacy of the bagel as it relates to each city’s Jewish cultural and culinary identity. \nWe will be joined by food historians and activists Sari Kamin (MOFAD\, New York) and Kat Romanow (The Wandering Chew\, Montreal) who will discuss what makes each city’s bagel so beloved and how they came to be. We will also hear from Montreal’s foremost bagel makers about their connections to our cities’ beloved baked goods\, and all guests will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A following the discussion. \nThroughout the evening\, visitors will be invited to try complimentary samples of bagels – and bagel-related treats – from Montreal favourites including St-Viateur Bagel\, Bagels le Trou\, Les Givrés\, Zaidie’s Smoked Salmon\, and Shelsky’s of Brooklyn. House-made cocktails will be available featuring ingredients from Le Seltzer and Cirka Distilleries. \nJoin us in our new space on St-Laurent for a night of noshing\, drinking\, and schmoozing about one of our favourite foods. And just for the record\, this is not a competition – you can be your own judge on that one! \nAll tickets ($10 plus tax) include complimentary food samples from our guest vendors. \nAbout Our Speakers: \nSari Kamin is Public Programs Director at MOFAD. Previously\, she was the Senior Publicity Manager of Culinary and Lifestyle at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt\, a food writer\, and the host and creator of Food Without Borders on Heritage Radio Network\, a show that explores the intersection of food\, politics\, and identity. She holds a Masters Degree in Food Studies from New York University \nKat Romanow is a Jewish food historian\, mother\, and co-founder of The Wandering Chew. Her background includes an MA in Judaic studies and food studies\, a position as the Director of Food programming at the Museum of Jewish Montreal\, where she created the walking tour Beyond the Bagel\, and ran a restaurant that served modern Jewish food. She is passionate about using food as a medium to teach people about Jewish culture and history\, and hopes to create a more inclusive Jewish community through her work. \nWe thank our organizational partners The Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life and MOFAD. This event was made possible with support from the ROI Community Grassroots Events Program. \nCLICK HERE TO GET YOUR TICKETS.

SUMMARY:Red Light Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming back Professor Karen Herland for a special walking tour of Montreal’s historic Red Light District! \nSex work\, especially in its most visible forms\, tends to be recognized as a problem\, requiring intervention and eradication. As a major transportation hub and port city\, many sectors of Montreal’s economy were intertwined with the sex trade\, even as police and politicians manipulated social responses (positive and negative) to the presence of a thriving Red Light District. From Maimie Pinzer to Harry Ship and through to the present day\, this tour explores the social\, economic\, labour\, cultural\, racial\, and gender history of Montreal through its former Red Light\, which for decades thrived in the heart of Montreal’s burgeoning Jewish community. \nThis tour covers 150 years and 10 city blocks over 1.5-2 hours. The tour begins on the southeast corner of Boulevard René Lévesque and Boulevard St. Laurent and ends near St. Laurent metro station. Please note that while the tour will be led in English\, questions can be asked and answered in French. \nTickets are $23 general admission and $12 for students. Click here to purchase. Please note that event capacity is limited to 20 participants – purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment! \nAll tour group participants must wear a mask for the duration of the walking tour and maintain social distancing.

SUMMARY:Playing Jewish Histories: Sounds of the Oud
DESCRIPTION:Like the Jewish people\, the oud found a home in a diverse range of countries. From North Africa\, through the Middle East\, and up into the Caucasus and Balkans. For this reason\, it is a wonderful vessel by which to explore the life of many Jewish populations from around the world: investigating how they expressed themselves\, and connected with their homes in diaspora. \nJoin us with emerging scholar and musician Zack Youcha as we explore the histories and stories surrounding the oud\, a popular stringed instrument central to the sounds of many Jewish communities in the Diaspora. \nThrough a virtual panel discussion moderated by Zack\, musical recordings\, and performances by a selection of musicians\, Playing Jewish Histories: Sounds of the Oud will explore the connection between Jews\, their lives in diaspora\, and music they play. It aims to provide historical background\, as well as show the music’s cultural significance\, and its place in modern Jewish life. \nThis event is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, which is funded by the Quebec Community Group Network’s Community Investment Fund. We also thank KlezKanada\, the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue of Montreal\, and the Sephardic Jewish Brotherhood of America for their partnership. \n*Registration for this event is required ahead of time via Jlive. Click here to reserve your spot.*\n \nAbout Zack:\nZack Youcha is a musician\, academic\, and current MA student in Jewish Studies at McGill University. He comes from an Ottoman Sephardic Jewish family of musicians\, and is always looking for ways to help share the beauty of music\, in all its forms\, with the world. Zack is working on an album and website entitled Playing Jewish Histories which will highlight a series of instruments popular in diasporic Jewish communities.

SUMMARY:What does representation mean? A Script Reading for "Mazel" with Hannah Grover
DESCRIPTION:Join the cast and crew members of an in-development web series\, tentatively titled Mazel for a script reading of an episode\, during which the community will be given the opportunity to provide feedback and insight into what they would like to see from sapphic media. \nMazel follows two young women\, Miriam and Lindsay\, through graduate school as they navigate the development of their respective sexualities. It is an important exploration of various privileges and lived experiences as they pertain to sexuality\, religious upbringing\, and political endeavours. Each topic will be explored by the characters— Miriam as a Jewish out lesbian who expresses a deep interest in queer fandom\, particularly the book Wicked\, as she sees herself portrayed positively in the queer undertones of the narrative\, and Lindsay\, a closeted bisexual woman who struggles with embracing hers due to internalized biphobia. After a few months of being roommates in Montreal\, the two women forge a friendship that later develops into a romance that allows for the flourishing of their respective marginalized identities. \nRegistration is required ahead of time via Jlive. Click here to reserve your ticket. \nAbout Hannah: \nHannah Grover is a multimedia artist in Montreal\, currently developing a sapphic/Jewish-centred web series about what it means to be visible and welcomed. She is likewise an emerging scholar just completing a Masters in Media Studies at Concordia University. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in English from the University of Regina with a concentration in creative writing and has experience as a tutor\, student journalist\, actor in film\, theatre\, and television\, and as an educational video producer. Hannah is passionate about intersectional feminist filmmaking\, queer writing (be it prose or poetry)\, and community activism. \nThis event is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, which is funded by the Quebec Community Group Network’s Community Investment Fund.

SUMMARY:Pathways: A Book Launch + Shiva with Sonia Bazar
DESCRIPTION:Dearly Beloved:\nImportant religious texts are often buried among people\, and sometimes given headstones. \nThis book is having a shiva. \nOn March 23\, we invite you with Sonia Bazar to come pay your respects to Pathways. \nPathways is a short self-published book of art and poetry. Pathways explores the physical and emotional space of Montreal’s oldest Jewish cemetery\, Back River. Over time\, a neighbourhood has encompassed it. The Back River Cemetery exists in distinct contrast to the Metro station\, gas station and one-star hotel that surround it. Black-and-white photos and maps ground the poems in the real world. Every cemetery contains many moments of grief. \nUsing the framework of Sheila Clark’s grief map\, poems move through different stages of grieving while focusing on the history of the cemetery and rituals of Jewish mourning. Pathways combines the personal and historical\, to create curiosity for this crumbling monument to Jewish life and death in Montreal.  \nThis event is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, which is funded by the Quebec Community Group Network’s Community Investment Fund. We also thank Violet Bakehouse and Talk Death for their partnership. \nRegistration is encouraged ahead of time for this in-person event. Reserve your spot through Jlive here. The QR code attached to your ticket will be scanned upon entry.  \nMore Information:\nDress code: Please wear black.\nCopies of Pathways will be for sale for 15$ (Cash only).\nA reading and short eulogy will take place at 5:30pm. \nIn accordance with current restrictions\, this is a mask-on event. Free shiva-themed snacks will be available to take home. All food will be gluten- and dairy-free so even cousin David with the IBS\, and aunt Naomi with the Celiac will be able to enjoy themselves. \nLocation:\nViolet Bakehouse\, 2009 boul. Decarie (Vendôme metro). Please note that the venue is located three steps below ground level. It is not wheelchair accessible. \nAbout Sonia:\nMontreal-born and based. Sonia Bazar earned a BFA and MFA in Photography at Concordia University. Through sculpture\, photography and poetry\, their practice examines the notion of alien landscapes and how the body belongs to space. SUMMARY:Ladino Through Its Proverbs: A Workshop with Nesi Altaras
DESCRIPTION:Ladino is a language that brings together Spanish grammar with vocabulary and ideas from Hebrew\, Turkish\, French and various other languages of the Eastern Mediterranean. The joy and wisdom of this language is stored within its numerous\, colourful\, funny\, and often musical sayings and proverbs. There has recently been a wave of interest in this language and ways to engage in Sephardic culture in secular ways. \nOn February 23\, this interactive workshop will do just that! Join us with Montreal-based writer and language enthusiast Nesi Altaras as we learn about how Ladino developed\, why it declined\, and the efforts to revivify the language. Participants will learn about various sayings and proverbs – and hopefully guess a few with hints. Finally\, equipped with a word bank and a basic understanding of proverbs\, participants will be able to create and share their own sayings. SUMMARY:Needlework\, From Factory to Living Room: An Embroidery Workshop with Claire Sigal
DESCRIPTION:Needlework is woven into the fabric of Jewish art and culture. It is the fertile land of mysticism and creativity – just looking and reading doesn’t let you know why. On Sunday\, February 13\, join us with Claire Sigal as we practice and ponder the histories of Jewish needlework. \nComing from the ethos of Tikkun Olam (“mending the world”) and through a meditative approach to making\, Claire will share the histories of Jewish garment work and how so much creativity came from it – including her own great-grandmother\, who worked as a garment worker in Montreal. Participants are invited to engage in the embroidery\, but are equally invited to sit and listen as Claire shares with us this rich history. We will learn about the history of the garment workers’ union\, their literary and musical involvements\, as well as their communities and families in Montreal and beyond. \nNear the end of the evening\, a Q&A session will invite participants to share their curiosities with Claire\, who brings an inclusive knowledge of the Jewish garment industry and its associated cultural ties. \nA list of materials will be provided to registrants ahead of time for those who wish to join the stitch-along\, and an embroidery pattern prepared by Claire\, based on a piece of her great-grandmother’s needlework. \nRegistration is required ahead of time via JLive. Click here to reserve your spot.  \nAbout Claire:  \nClaire Sigal is a researcher and emerging artist from Montreal. She recently graduated with a BA in Art History from Concordia University. Claire’s work focuses on the overlapping of textiles and literature in different contexts\, including: needlework\, Jewish folk culture\, Yiddish music\, queerness\, womanhood\, and fashion history. Her writing has been published in Yiara\, CUJAH\, and other publications. In 2021\, Claire took part in an internship at the Center for Jewish Art (CJA) in Jerusalem. She is a part of the 2021-2022 Microgrant Cohort for Creative or Cultural Exploration at the Museum of Jewish Montreal\, from which this workshop has been developed. \nThis event is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, which is funded by the Quebec Community Group Network’s Community Investment Fund. We also thank The Jewish Public Library for their partnership.

SUMMARY:Chrismukkah Party: A Podcast Launch with Sarah Deshaies
DESCRIPTION:Season’s Greetings! This is a tale about two holidays\, celebrated by people of different faiths. But while Christmas and Chanukkah honour distinct events that happened thousands of years ago\, their close arrival in the early\, dark days of winter mean that many families end up twinning the two. With an increase in intermarriage in an ever-secular society\, some Jews are adding trees to their menorahs and are finding themselves singing carols. \nChrismukkah Party is a new\, festive podcast that delves into the rituals and traditions that interfaith families have created in order to celebrate together\, from Chrismukkah cocktails to December advent calendars to Magen David tree toppers. \nRegistration is required ahead of time on JLive. Click here to reserve your spot! The Zoom link will be sent to you via email upon registration.  \nOn January 26\, join us as host and producer Sarah Deshaies sits down with two of her guests\, Rabbi Denise Handlarski (Secular Synagogue) and Lauren Schreiber-Sasaki (Jewish&)\, to delve into the questions\, concerns and thoughts that shape how interfaith families carve out new traditions and meanings for holidays and life cycle events. How are Jewish organizations working to support interfaith individuals and families? And is it wrong to combine Christmas and Chanukkah? \nChrismukkah Party is created and hosted by Sarah Deshaies\, with the support of the Museum of Jewish Montreal. Sarah is a Montreal-based writer\, and morning show producer at CJAD 800\, and has celebrated Chanukkah and Christmas her whole life. \nWe thank the support of 18Doors and Jewish& for their partnership. \nThis event is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, which is funded by the Quebec Community Group Network’s Community Investment Fund.

SUMMARY:Around Montreal's Dining Table: A Discussion with Beautys Luncheonette and Restaurant Beba
DESCRIPTION:Along Boulevard St-Laurent and across Montreal\, many Jewish-owned restaurants have generously shared their creations with locals and visitors alike. How can restaurants old and new continue to tell the story of Jewish culture in the city?\n\n\nAt Beautys Luncheonette in the heart of the Plateau\, patrons are treated to breakfast favourites like the classic “Mish-Mash” omelette\, bagels & lox sandwiches\, or homemade pancakes. Since opening in 1942 in Montreal’s Jewish garment district\, Beautys has become a beloved family-owned staple\, now in its third generation. Down in Montreal’s southwestern neighbourhood of Verdun\, a newer restaurant shows us how diasporic traditions can be created with dishes that speak to layers of history and innovation. Restaurant Beba\, owned by brothers Ari and Pablo and opened in 2019\, focuses on Argentinian cuisine that uses flavours from the country’s Spanish and Italian communities\, altogether crafting a menu that is inspired by their global origins and the local culinary domain. \nOn October 4\, join us for a virtual roundtable discussion with Larry and Elana Sckolnick of Beautys Luncheonette\, and Ari Schor of Restaurant Beba. Moderated by food historian Lara Rabinovitch\, we will chat about how these restaurants – one that has been around for three generations and another for nearly three years – use their family’s traditions and personal experiences to bring light to contemporary Jewish cuisine and culture in Montreal. \nTo add to your experience\, all registrants will receive a discount on dine-in or takeout at both participating restaurants. More details to come upon registration and during the event. \nPLEASE NOTE: This event is free and registration is required ahead of time on JLive. Click here to register. You will receive a link to join this virtual event upon registration and before the event is scheduled to begin. \nWe thank the support of the Nussia and Andre Aisenstadt Foundation\, the Jewish Community Foundation\, and Federation CJA for making this event possible. \nABOUT OUR SPEAKERS: \nLarry Sckolnick:\nHymie ”Beauty” and Freda Sckolnick took over the Bancroft Stationery Store in 1942 and quickly grew it into a popular neighbourhood coffee shop. Their son Larry joined them in the business in the late 1960s and developed the coffee shop into Beauty’s Luncheonette. Under Larry’s guidance\, Beauty’s has become a Montreal institution\, famous around the world for the quality and authenticity of its food and its warm and welcoming ambience. \nElana Sckolnick runs Beautys Luncheonette alongside her father Larry and her sister Julie. After graduating from McGill University\, Elana spent more than ten years working in marketing and philanthropic development. She joined the family business in 2005 for the unique opportunity to work with her father and grandfather Hymie\, and is proud to continue her family’s passion for food and hospitality into the next generation. \nAri Schor is the chef and co-owner of Restaurant Beba. Born in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, Ari moved with his family to Winnipeg\, Manitoba at age 13 and\, soon after\, at age 16\, began working in kitchens. After moving to Montreal in 2012\, he spent six years as the chef de cuisine at Liverpool House\, part of the Joe Beef group of restaurants. In 2019\, Ari left Liverpool House to open Restaurant Beba with his brother\, Pablo. Beba is the culmination of all of Ari and Pablo’s experiences with food\, both in fine dining and around the family table. Ari lives in Montreal with his wife\, Ashley\, and daughter\, Isabel. \nLara Rabinovitch is a writer and specialist in Jewish food history. Her PhD covered Romanian immigration to New York City and Montreal\, and she has since consulted for a variety of companies and organizations such as Google and the Skirball Cultural Center In Los Angeles\, where she is Co-Curator of the upcoming national exhibition on the history and culture of Jewish delicatessen. She was a producer on the Sundance/IFC film “City of Gold\,” about the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Jonathan Gold\, and you can also find Lara’s writing in the Los Angeles Times\, Saveur magazine\, the Globe & Mail and other media outlets.
