SUMMARY:Imagining A Queer Eruv: A Walking Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Imagining A Queer Eruv: A Walking Conversation with artist and researcher Iso E. Setel. Starting at Parc St-Viateur in Outremont\, this guided conversation will take us through the Mile End by way of the neighbourhood’s back alleys and looping paths\, ending in Champs des Possibles with complimentary snacks and beverages. Along the walk\, Iso will be sharing their research and the work that went into creating their book\, Eruv: Queer Installations of Jewish Space\, while inviting attendees to reflect upon and share their experiences in queer and Jewish spaces within and beyond Montreal. \nThis walking conversation and its associated book examine the ways in which eruvin function as queer objects\, dissolving distinctions between the public and the private\, and reconditioning spatial relations. Eruv collages together text\, photography\, and paper-cut maps of ritual terrains to articulate how eruvin might be utilized as ritual technology in projects of queer liberation and community formation. \nTickets are $12 for Students and $23 for General Admission\, plus applicable taxes. \nAbout Iso: \nIso E. Setel is a filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist based in Montreal / Tiohtiá:ke since 2017. Utilizing moving images\, text\, and textiles\, their work addresses questions of visibility\, sense and memory in documentary film and installation. Their work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Canada. In 2022 and 2023\, Iso has facilitated workshops on the Jewish art of papercutting at the Museum of Jewish Montreal. Originally from Buffalo\, New York\, Iso received a BA in Political Studies and Electronic Media Arts from Simon’s Rock in 2017\, and an MFA in Film Production from Concordia University in 2021. \nPlease note capacity is limited\, so we encourage early registration to avoid disappointment. Copies of Eruv: Notes on Queer Installations of Jewish Space will be available for purchase at the end of the walking portion\, $5 or pay-what-you-can. Proceeds from book sales will be donated to projects that support queer youth in Montreal. Books are also available to those who are unable to attend. Email Iso at iso.setel@gmail.com to request a copy.  \nWeather Policy: In the event of light rain\, the tour will go on as scheduled. In the event of severe weather conditions\, the tour will be rescheduled and all participants will be automatically invited to attend the rescheduled date. \n\nREAD LESS

SUMMARY:Hiking the Torah Trail with Rabbi Adina Lewittes
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Jewish Montreal and Rabbi Adina Lewittes invite you to take part in a special evening that combines spirituality and care for nature along the trails of Mont-Royal. \nLong before God was locked up in temples\, synagogues\, churches and mosques\, people encountered the holy in the awesome outdoors: by the side of a river\, on top of a mountain\, in a lush valley\, or in a shaded forest. Long before prayer books and hymnals\, people prayed from their hearts and spoke to the Divine from their souls. \nShackled to our desks and our devices\, we’ve forgotten and become alienated from the spiritual power of the outdoors. Nature\, with all its majesty and its mystery\, summons us to pay more attention – to ourselves\, to others\, to the world around us. Free and unconstrained by all that makes demands on us in our modern\, tech-saturated lives\, nature reminds us of the freedom within us all to become who and what we wish. With our planet in peril and the future of our civilization in question\, it has never felt more urgent to rekindle our connection to the Earth and to recentre its wellbeing alongside our own. \nJoin Rabbi Adina Lewittes for a 90-minute intentional walk along the trails of Mont-Royal. As the day winds down\, we’ll pause seven times to consider a piece of deep Jewish wisdom about our relationship to the created world. Seven is a powerful number in Judaism\, one that signals the holy work of creating; one that invites wholeness or completeness. Enjoy time to reflect and connect as well. \nTickets start at $12 for students and $23 for general admission\, plus applicable taxes. Please note that event capacity is limited. Purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment. \nClick here to reserve your tickets. \nABOUT RABBI ADINA LEWITTES \nRabbi Adina “Dini” Lewittes founded Sha’ar\, a values-driven Jewish community that for twenty years provided creative gateways into Jewish life exemplified by a commitment to spiritual\, societal and environmental sustainability. Dini continues to build community around nature-oriented Jewish practice\, and writes and teaches on the changing landscape of identity and belonging\, on sexual and gender diversity\, on evolving paradigms for Jewish ritual\, and on contemporary Jewish Law. She is a leading Jewish voice on multifaith/multiheritage family engagement. Dini is a member of the senior rabbinic faculty of the Shalom Hartman Institute\, of the Board of Trustees of Keshet for LGBTQ Equality in Jewish Life\, and of the Heschel School in NYC. \nWeather Policy: Please note that this event will take place rain or shine\, unless under a warning of severe weather conditions.

SUMMARY:Sampling Havruta: An Interpretive Workshop with Etta Sandry
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores the connections between Jewish inquiry and material sampling in craft and creative practices. \nIn textile and craft practices\, sampling and testing are processes of learning techniques and demonstrating results. Havruta is a traditional Jewish study practice of paired or group reading\, discussion\, questioning\, and meaning making. This winter\, artist Etta Sandry hosted small-group sampling havrutas at the Museum of Jewish Montreal that invited artists and craft practitioners to gather\, share their material samples\, and discuss their practices of inquiry and making. Building on the themes that emerged in these meetings\, this creative event opens the sampling havruta to a larger public and invites participants to contribute to the creation of a collective workbook zine. \nFocused on instruction and interpretation as a commonality between Jewish inquiry and craft practice\, in this 2.5 hour workshop Etta will present some of the key findings and questions from her recent research and prompt participants to creatively interpret an instruction through a paper weaving activity. Through practices of inquiry and discourse\, participants will reflect on their personal creative practices and share with others. They will then be invited to contribute an instruction or template to be included in a collective zine – these could include a knitting pattern\, a recipe\, a score\, a weave draft\, a sewing pattern\, a question\, or something else! Contributions will be compiled into an instruction book that will be distributed after the event. \nThis event is free and all materials will be provided. Participants are invited to bring something to write with/in\, any paper materials they may want to weave with\, and an instruction in any form. Snacks and beverages will be available. \nClick here to reserve your free ticket. \nThis event is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, which is funded by the Quebec Community Group Network’s Community Innovation Fund. We also thank the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal (JCF) for their support. \nPlease note that the upper levels of our building are currently not accessible to guests with limited mobility. This event will take place on the ground floor. \nAbout Etta: \nEtta Sandry is an artist\, educator\, and facilitator from the midwestern United States\, currently based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. Her material-focused research is rooted in fibre and weaving and spans media through sculpture\, writing\, and installation. Etta completed her MFA in the Fibre & Material Practices program at Concordia University in the spring of 2021. She has exhibited her work in the United States and Canada and was the 2022 Experimental Weaver in Residence at the Unstable Design Lab in Boulder\, Colorado where she ran her first Sampling Club.Etta has recently worked as a board member at articule in Montreal and as a volunteer staff in ACRE Residency’s fibre studio in Wisconsin. \n\nREAD LESS

SUMMARY:Red Light Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming back Professor Karen Herland for a special walking tour of Montreal’s historic Red Light District! \nSex work\, especially in its most visible forms\, tends to be recognized as a problem\, requiring intervention and eradication. As a major transportation hub and port city\, many sectors of Montreal’s economy were intertwined with the sex trade\, even as police and politicians manipulated social responses (positive and negative) to the presence of a thriving Red Light District. From Maimie Pinzer to Harry Ship and through to the present day\, this tour explores the social\, economic\, labour\, cultural\, racial\, and gender history of Montreal through its former Red Light\, which for decades thrived in the heart of Montreal’s burgeoning Jewish community. \nThis tour covers 150 years and 10 city blocks over 1.5-2 hours. The tour begins on the southeast corner of Boulevard René Lévesque and Boulevard St. Laurent and ends near St. Laurent metro station. Please note that while the tour will be led in English\, questions can be asked and answered in French. \nTickets are $23 general admission and $12 for students\, plus taxes. Please note that event capacity is limited. Purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment.  \nClick here to reserve your spot.

SUMMARY:Intricate Intimacies: A Shavuot Papercutting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, we’re hosting another papercutting workshop with Iso Setel for a special Shavuot edition! \nThis creative workshop that will delve into the Jewish folk art tradition of papercutting. With artist and researcher Iso E. Setel\, participants will learn about the significance of this delicate art form\, from its religious uses in homes and synagogues\, its ties to Shavuot\, as well as its presence in numerous contemporary artists who are redefining the medium. \nThe relationship between papercutting and Shavuot is one that runs centuries long. It was common to beautify the interior of one’s home with papercuttings. Known in Yiddish as shevuoslakh (meaning “little Shavuots”) or royzalakh (“rose\,” or “rosette”)\, this delicate art form was also accessible and sustainable. \nAll participants will be invited to create papercut or royzalakh of their own\, either from a template provided\, or from their own imagination. By the end of the workshop\, everyone will be able to take home a finished or in-progress papercut to bring home. \nTickets are $17 for general admission and $12 for students\, plus applicable taxes. All materials will be provided by the Concordia University Centre for Creative Reuse (CUCCR) and Au Papier Japonais. Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available. Early registration is encouraged as capacity for this workshop is limited. \nClick here to reserve your ticket. Their work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Canada\, most recently as part of IGNITION ’16 at the Leonard & Bina Ellen Gallery in 2020. SUMMARY:How To Hold Glass: A Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION: “Can anyone find the ability to build a house in the air?” – Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chanania \nIn fall of 2020\, Rach Klein began to sort through their father’s archive. They pulled out dusty boxes from the furnace room\, and found themselves among hundreds of slides\, hours of film\, notes\, and letters\, all showing the lifework of master glassblower\, Toan Klein. Born 1949 in Long Island\, Toan went on to photograph farmland in Ohio\, glass factories in Mexico\, and the mountains of Appalachia before he immigrated to Montreal in 1978 and weaved his way into the history of Canadian craft. On the 10th-floor of 10 Ontario Street\, with windows overlooking Place-des-Arts\, Toan set up the first hot glass art studio in Montreal. In the fifty years following\, Toan would go on to create extraordinary work that expands the possibilities of glassmaking through its unique combination of photography and sculpture\, and which can be found in museum and personal collections across the world. \nMeditating on the alchemy of glassmaking in Jewish storytelling\, How To Hold Glass is an experimental documentary made through a combination of archival ephemera and contemporary interviews. On April 27\, please join us for a film screening and artist talk-back\, moderated by Ara Osterweil. Beverages will be available for purchase at our bar (payable by card only). \nPlease note that the upper levels of our building are currently not accessible to visitors with limited mobility. This event will take place on the ground floor. Masks are highly encouraged at this event to protect the safety of our guests.

SUMMARY:Daniel Kahn and Jake Shulman-Ment: Songwriting Workshop\, Jam Session\, and Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join KlezKanada and the Museum of Jewish Montreal for a Sunday full of Yiddish music and songwriting. You can choose to attend one of the workshops below\, a jam session\, and a concert taking place in the evening at Casa del Popolo. For more information about this special Sunday\, keep reading: \nWORKSHOP (1:00pm at the Museum of Jewish Montreal)\nYiddish Song Smuggling \nThis workshop\, taught by Detroit-born\, Hamburg-based troubadour and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Kahn\, will focus on polyglot performance\, traditional subversion\, tradaptation (translation + adaptation)\, multi-musical mixology\, and other modes of border-crossing in modern Yiddish song work. \nTicket information below. \nJAM SESSION (3:00pm at the Museum of Jewish Montreal)\nKlezmer Jam Session \nJoin KlezKanada and the Jewish Museum of Montreal for a klezmer music jam\, led by New Yorker master fiddler Jake Shulman-Ment! Aimed at intermediate to advanced musicians but open to all\, this jam session is a space where Montrealers can come together to play klezmer music\, learn repertoire\, and build a community. The jam session will start with a short repertoire workshop\, where Jake will teach a tune or two (by ear) to get the jam started. \nTicket information below. \nCONCERT (8:00pm at Casa del Popolo) Tickets to the concert can be purchased through Casa del Popolo’s website or at their door. \nFollowing the workshop and jam session\, guests are invited to head over to Casa del Popolo for a concert with Daniel Kahn and Jake Shulman-Ment: The Building & Other Songs. \nDetroit-born\, Hamburg-based troubadour and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Kahn and New Yorker master fiddler Jake Shulman-Ment have been playing and traveling together for nearly twenty years. After so many years playing together in many bands and projects\, they have finally joined up to record an analog duo record: The Building & Other Songs. It is\, as Kahn says\, “the most personal and intimate selection of songs I’ve ever recorded. And with Jake\, it was like recording it with a brother.” The interpretations range from radical treatments of modern Yiddish songs such as Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman’s title track “Der Binyen / The Building\,” to new Yiddish translations of some of Kahn’s lyrical heroes: Cohen\, Brecht\, Springsteen\, Guthrie\, and Waits. Yiddish serves here as a kind of broken mirror\, reflecting both despair and repair\, exile and ecstasy\, loss of trust and wanderlust. \nDoors at 7:30pm. Performance at 8:00pm. \nTICKET OPTIONS & BUNDLES \nWorkshop:\nStudent: $13.80\nRegular: $17.25 \nJam Session:\n$5 for all \nWorkshop & Jam Session Bundle (best deal):\nStudent: $15\nRegular: $20 \nClick here to get your tickets. \nPlease note that masks are strongly encouraged. KlezKanada will have N95 masks available at the door for those who need them. The Museum of Jewish Montreal is currently not accessible to guests with limited mobility. SUMMARY:Aguas: A Musical Journey
DESCRIPTION:From Buenos Aires\, through São Paulo\, and into Montreal\, join us for a musical journey through waterways. \nSaxophone player\, improviser and composer\, born in a Jewish family in Buenos Aires\, Damián Birbrier comes from a family of travelers and immigrants: each generation of the Birbrier family has lived in a different country. In each location\, a river has been central to their lives. Aguas – meaning waters – is a musical and visual tribute to his family and its history. \nThis musical passage finds inspiration in the meaningful bodies of water near which each generation lived and explores the loss and hope that comes with every new location\, every new country to call home. The audience will travel from the shores of Kiev’s Dnieper to Buenos Aires’s Rio de la Plata\, from São Paulo’s Rio do Peixe to Montreal’s Saint Lawrence. Mixing original photographic works and engravings with instrumental music performances\, this large-scale project explores each location through musical storytelling\, mixing genres such as jazz\, Latin American music\, Jewish music\, and electroacoustic music. \nOn March 16\, you’re invited to experience the first performance of Aguas. This event is an occasion to share the research\, exploration\, and development of the first part of Aguas. Birbrier will also share his creative process and the ways in which he has explored and been inspired by the history of his great-grandparents who\, in the face of violence\, fled from Eastern Europe to South America. A musical performance by Damián Birbrier (saxophone) and Amichai Ben Shalev (bandoneon) will be followed by an open discussion on memory\, music\, and diaspora. It is his hope that this personal exploration resonates with other members of the Jewish and other communities who might wonder about their own family’s history and journey. \nDoors: 7:00pm\nPerformance: 7:30pm \nBeverages will be available for purchase at our bar (payable by card only). \nClick here to reserve your free ticket. \nThis event is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, which is funded by the Quebec Community Group Network’s Community Innovation Fund. SUMMARY:Take Care of Yourself For Me: An Amulet-Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What gives talismans their protective power? And how do they shape our relationships to people and place?  \nThese sentimental objects can help us find one another\, and keep us safe on the way – but today\, the majority of Jewish amulets and jewellery are mass-produced\, with the universal taking priority over the local and personal. In this event we’ll be taking the creative process back into our own hands. \nJoin us for an amulet-making workshop with micrograntee and Judaica designer Mika Benesh. Starting with a group exploration of our relationships to talismans\, participants will work together to create protective amulets for one another using jeweller’s modelling wax\, which will then be cast 1:1 in sterling silver and yours to keep. No prior jewellery-making experience is required. Come solo or with a loved one. \nIn this local and intimate setting\, we’ll be particularly attentive to the experiences and needs of marginalized people\, and the ways we already know how to find and take care of each other by making meaning and joy. \nParticipants are encouraged (but not obligated!) to bring along any protective talismans\, amulets\, or objects of theirs they feel comfortable\, as well as any texts\, blessings or stories they hold close– they don’t necessarily have to be Jewish either. Hybrid experiences\, practices\, identities and cultures are most welcome. \nDue to very limited capacity\, early sign-ups are encouraged. Click here to reserve your spot. \nABOUT MIKA: \nMika Benesh is a designer-researcher working between unceded Gadigal + Dharug Country and Tiohtià:ke in the australian and canadian colonies. Broadly speaking\, they trace relations between cultural institutions and archives\, Jewish material cultures\, queer / trans lives & movements\, white supremacy and settler colonialism. As well as writing\, they work with metal\, graphite\, textiles\, and interactive digital media. Across their practice\, Mika is interested in catching a small hold of many Jewish futures. Currently\, they’re undertaking a Judaic Studies MA at Concordia University. \nThis workshop is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, which is funded by the Quebec Community Group Network’s Community Innovation Fund. We also thank the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal (JCF) for their support.

SUMMARY:Intricate Intimacies: A Papercutting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:How might certain materials be created and used to orient ourselves in domestic and ritual space?\nHow can something as commonplace as paper perform as a designation of place in nurturing a sense of ‘home’? \nIn response to our ongoing exhibition Public Intimacy\, we invite you to an interactive workshop that will delve into the Jewish folk art tradition of papercutting. With artist and researcher Iso E. Setel\, participants will learn about the significance of this delicate art form\, from its religious uses in homes and synagogues\, to numerous contemporary practitioners who are reviving the medium. \nFollowing a discussion on the relationship between the art and history of papercutting and its interwoven themes within Public Intimacy\, participants will be invited to create a papercut work of their own\, either from a historical sample that they may trace\, or from their own imagination. By the end of the workshop\, everyone will be able to take home a finished or in-progress papercut. \nTickets are $17 for general admission and $12 for students\, plus applicable taxes. All materials will be provided. Complimentary and beverages will be available. Early registration is encouraged as capacity for this workshop is limited. \nAbout Iso:\nIso E. Setel is a filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist based in Montreal / Tiohtiá:ke since 2017. Utilizing moving images\, text\, and textiles\, their work addresses questions of visibility\, sense and memory in documentary film and installation. Their work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Canada\, most recently as part of IGNITION ’16 at the Leonard & Bina Ellen Gallery in 2020. Originally from Buffalo\, New York\, Iso received a BA in Political Studies and Electronic Media Arts from Simon’s Rock in 2017\, and an MFA in Film Production from Concordia University in 2021. \nPlease note that at the moment\, the upper levels of our building are unfortunately inaccessible to visitors with limited mobility. Although the workshop will take place on the ground level\, the walkthrough of the exhibition will take place on the upper floors.

SUMMARY:BLACK OX ORKESTAR – EVERYTHING RETURNS – ALBUM LAUNCH
DESCRIPTION:Everything Returns reconvenes the original Black Ox Orkestar lineup after a 15-year hiatus. Arising from the fertile Montréal post-punk scene of the early 2000s\, the band comprises Scott Gilmore\, Jessica Moss and Thierry Amar of Thee Silver Mt. Zion (Amar also continues to compose and play bass for Godspeed You! Black Emperor) and Gabriel Levine of Sackville. Black Ox made two acclaimed albums of roiling acoustic avant-folk in the mid-2000s\, exploring Eastern European and North African folkways through the lens of a gritty\, atmospheric indie rock sensibility\, juxtaposing interpretations of instrumentals from various Jewish\, Romani\, Balkan and Arabic traditions with originals led by Gilmore’s politically-charged Yiddish vocals. These early albums have since become lodestars for many among a new generation of Yiddish\, Klezmer and radical Jewish music practitioners and fans.\n\nThe new Black Ox Orkestar album picks up right where the band left off: a sublime\, poetic\, politically-informed statement of re-energized Jewish diasporic musical intent\, where Gilmore’s voice and the band’s simmering arrangements conjure an ardent\, doleful balladry that also echoes the sound and style of artists like Tindersticks\, The National\, Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. Everything Returns is a haunting\, richly textured\, darkly sparkling song cycle at once from a vanished world and very much of our time and place.

A cashless (card-only) bar will also be available with beverages from Le Seltzer. We thank the Jewish Public Library and Spark: Montréal for their partnership in this program. SUMMARY:Der Eydes Volume II Launch with Cesario Lavery
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Museum of Jewish Montreal and Librairie Drawn & Quarterly with artist and author Cesario Lavery for a launch of the second volume of Der Eydes (The Witness). \nPicking up after Volume I’s breathless discovery of an old Kafka volume belonging to Dr Chaim Shatan\, Der Eydes Volume II dives into the mystery of parentage and origin – Dr Shatan’s\, and the author’s father’s. Both a meditation on the unknowable and a determined investigation into the past\, this next instalment of Der Eydes is about family and belonging. \nJoin author Cesario Lavery for a talk on genealogical research and writing about families – one’s own\, and others. Following Cesario’s discussion and reading from Volume II\, we will open up the floor for a moderated Q&A session from our guests. Both volumes of Der Eydes will be available for sale (Volume I: $10\, Volume II: $15) at the venue. \nClick here to reserve your free tickets. \nPlease note capacity for this event is limited so early registration is encouraged. Also note that the Museum’s upper floors are currently not accessible to visitors with limited mobility. To protect the safety of Museum staff\, guests\, and event facilitators\, we strongly encourage the wearing of masks or face coverings to this event. \nWe acknowledge the support of the Canada Council of the Arts for supporting the development of this project.

SUMMARY:ART CHORAL Romantique with Ensemble vocal Arts-Québec
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum of Jewish Montreal in welcoming the renowned choral group Ensemble vocal Arts-Québec for an intimate concert in our new space featuring 19th century choral music by Jewish composer Salomone Rossi. \nExquisite European choral music from the 19th century is framed by two psaum settings by Rossi\, who composed and printed a large set of motets for use in synagogues in Hebrew during the 17th century. While his music is modern in his day\, through the lens of their choral compositions the 19th century\, composers looked back to the longstanding musical tradition of their musical predecessors. As a result\, this concert will cross the barriers of time and brings out the fascinating similarities and differences between composers like G.Verdi\, P.I. Tchaikovsky\, F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy\, Johannes Brahms and others. Led by chef de chef de chœur Matthias Maute\, this concert will be one not to be missed. \nDoors at 7:00pm. Show begins at 7:30pm. General admission seating on a first come\, first served basis. Click here to purchase your tickets.  \nThank you Mécénat Musica donors for having made this possible! Ensemble vocal Arts-Québec is supported by the Azrieli Foundation for the project ART CHORAL Coast to coast to coast. \nPlease note that the upper floors of our building are not currently accessible to guest with limited mobility.

SUMMARY:Imagining a Queer Eruv: A Walking Conversation
DESCRIPTION:On October 19\, join us for an autumn edition of imagining a queer eruv: a walking conversation with artist and researcher Iso E. Setel. Starting at Parc St-Viateur in Outremont\, this guided conversation will take us through the Mile End by way of the neighbourhood’s back alleys and looping paths. \nTo coincide with our ongoing exhibition Public Intimacy – which explores similar themes as Iso’s book – the tour will end at the Museum of Jewish Montreal at 5220 boul. St-Laurent\, where visitors will be invited to view the exhibition and consider overlapping concepts. \nTickets are $23 for General Admission and $12 for Students\, plus applicable taxes. \nClick here to reserve your spot.  \nPlease note that this is the third presentation of this event and capacity is limited\, so we encourage early registration to avoid disappointment. SUMMARY:The Brine Project
DESCRIPTION:Join interdisciplinary artist Simone Lucas and the Museum of Jewish Montreal for a fish tasting session and presentation of work-in-progress. The Brine Project asks how odorous\, pickled fish brine could be remediated as a multimedia video installation. While Simone was traveling in Lodz\, Poland on a family heritage trip\, a tour guide shared a story: in a pre-war fishmongers’ market\, herring brine soaked so deeply into the ground that the smell of fish persisted for a decade after the war. In this tale\, brine becomes a unique agent of memorialization. This project investigates how brine and video-as-brine could preserve stories about fish and Jews\, leaving material and non-material traces such as smell along the way. \nSimone will present work in progress and lines of inquiry on fish preservation\, inviting questions and contributions from participants. Pickling fish is integral to Simone’s artistic research. The audience will have an opportunity to smell and taste home-preserved fish and learn about the pickling process. All will be invited to share the memories and sensations these foods evoke. Vegan options will be provided. \nAttendees are kindly asked to wear masks for the duration of the event\, except while consuming food. \nCost: Attendees are invited to contribute a voluntary cash donation at the door. A limited amount of pickled fish will be available for sale. \nEvent Accessibility: The event space is wheelchair accessible. It will take place indoors\, in a large room with high ceilings. We would be grateful if you contact us ahead of time for any specific accessibility needs. \nAbout Simone:\nSimone Lucas (she/hers & they/them pronouns) is an interdisciplinary video artist\, educator\, and community activist of Jewish Ashkenazi descent\, a white settler based in Tio’tia:ke/Mooniyang (aka Montreal). \nSimone’s educational background integrates cultural studies and media production. She has an MA in Media Studies from Concordia University with scholarships from the FQRSC and SSHRC.  \nSimone creates with video\, multimedia installation\, sound\, and performance. Their non-fiction film\, I Think About You Every Day\, takes a feminist\, autobiographical approach by drawing on Their personal archive of correspondence with a friend. Politically grounded art and research is also a core part of Simone’s practice. Relationships to social movements inform their guiding principles in artistic processes. \nThis event is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, which is funded by the Quebec Community Group Network’s Community Investment Fund.

SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Bagels: Tasting Montreal and New York's Best
DESCRIPTION:Montreal and New York are known for their countless contributions to Jewish food and culture. Their bagels – though sometimes a point of competition between the two cities – stand out as delicious symbols for generations of Jewish migration\, settlement\, and imagination. A Tale of Two Bagels: Tasting Montreal and New York’s Best will be a unique opportunity to learn about\, explore\, and – most importantly – to sink our teeth into the legacy of the bagel as it relates to each city’s Jewish cultural and culinary identity. \nWe will be joined by food historians and activists Sari Kamin (MOFAD\, New York) and Kat Romanow (The Wandering Chew\, Montreal) who will discuss what makes each city’s bagel so beloved and how they came to be. We will also hear from Montreal’s foremost bagel makers about their connections to our cities’ beloved baked goods\, and all guests will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A following the discussion. \nThroughout the evening\, visitors will be invited to try complimentary samples of bagels – and bagel-related treats – from Montreal favourites including St-Viateur Bagel\, Bagels le Trou\, Les Givrés\, Zaidie’s Smoked Salmon\, and Shelsky’s of Brooklyn. House-made cocktails will be available featuring ingredients from Le Seltzer and Cirka Distilleries. \nJoin us in our new space on St-Laurent for a night of noshing\, drinking\, and schmoozing about one of our favourite foods. And just for the record\, this is not a competition – you can be your own judge on that one! \nAll tickets ($10 plus tax) include complimentary food samples from our guest vendors. \nAbout Our Speakers: \nSari Kamin is Public Programs Director at MOFAD. Previously\, she was the Senior Publicity Manager of Culinary and Lifestyle at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt\, a food writer\, and the host and creator of Food Without Borders on Heritage Radio Network\, a show that explores the intersection of food\, politics\, and identity. She holds a Masters Degree in Food Studies from New York University \nKat Romanow is a Jewish food historian\, mother\, and co-founder of The Wandering Chew. Her background includes an MA in Judaic studies and food studies\, a position as the Director of Food programming at the Museum of Jewish Montreal\, where she created the walking tour Beyond the Bagel\, and ran a restaurant that served modern Jewish food. She is passionate about using food as a medium to teach people about Jewish culture and history\, and hopes to create a more inclusive Jewish community through her work. \nWe thank our organizational partners The Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life and MOFAD. This event was made possible with support from the ROI Community Grassroots Events Program. \nCLICK HERE TO GET YOUR TICKETS.
