SUMMARY:Hiking the Torah Trail with Rabbi Adina Lewittes
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Jewish Montreal and Rabbi Adina Lewittes invite you to take part in a special evening that combines spirituality and care for nature along the trails of Mont-Royal. \nLong before God was locked up in temples\, synagogues\, churches and mosques\, people encountered the holy in the awesome outdoors: by the side of a river\, on top of a mountain\, in a lush valley\, or in a shaded forest. Long before prayer books and hymnals\, people prayed from their hearts and spoke to the Divine from their souls. \nShackled to our desks and our devices\, we’ve forgotten and become alienated from the spiritual power of the outdoors. Nature\, with all its majesty and its mystery\, summons us to pay more attention – to ourselves\, to others\, to the world around us. Free and unconstrained by all that makes demands on us in our modern\, tech-saturated lives\, nature reminds us of the freedom within us all to become who and what we wish. With our planet in peril and the future of our civilization in question\, it has never felt more urgent to rekindle our connection to the Earth and to recentre its wellbeing alongside our own. \nJoin Rabbi Adina Lewittes for a 90-minute intentional walk along the trails of Mont-Royal. As the day winds down\, we’ll pause seven times to consider a piece of deep Jewish wisdom about our relationship to the created world. Seven is a powerful number in Judaism\, one that signals the holy work of creating; one that invites wholeness or completeness. Enjoy time to reflect and connect as well. \nTickets start at $12 for students and $23 for general admission\, plus applicable taxes. Please note that event capacity is limited. Purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment. \nClick here to reserve your tickets. \nABOUT RABBI ADINA LEWITTES \nRabbi Adina “Dini” Lewittes founded Sha’ar\, a values-driven Jewish community that for twenty years provided creative gateways into Jewish life exemplified by a commitment to spiritual\, societal and environmental sustainability. Dini continues to build community around nature-oriented Jewish practice\, and writes and teaches on the changing landscape of identity and belonging\, on sexual and gender diversity\, on evolving paradigms for Jewish ritual\, and on contemporary Jewish Law. She is a leading Jewish voice on multifaith/multiheritage family engagement. Dini is a member of the senior rabbinic faculty of the Shalom Hartman Institute\, of the Board of Trustees of Keshet for LGBTQ Equality in Jewish Life\, and of the Heschel School in NYC. \nWeather Policy: Please note that this event will take place rain or shine\, unless under a warning of severe weather conditions.

SUMMARY:Sultanna is A Moroccan Jew Who Makes A Moroccan Rug: A Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening steeped in culture\, comedy\, and introspection with the premiere screening of Sultanna is A Moroccan Jew Who Makes A Moroccan Rug by filmmaker Sultanna Krispil. \nSultanna is A Moroccan Jew Who Makes A Moroccan Rug is a personal documentary created by filmmaker Sultanna Krispil\, which offers an exploration of her multifaceted heritage\, her unusual upbringing\, and her complex relationship with Judaism. \nThis is an invitation to experience the world through Sultanna’s eyes\, where heritage and heart converge in a delightful\, comedic collage of a film. The filmmaker grapples with a self-imposed challenge of crafting her own Moroccan rug\, a symbolic expedition towards understanding and embracing her roots. Is the film a vlog? An animation? A DIY lesson in rug making? Or is it a small whisper to her Agadir-born ancestors? \nOn June 22\, join us for an evening steeped in culture\, comedy\, and introspection. Enjoy some specially-spiced popcorn while you watch\, laugh\, feel some things\, and explore your own cultural narrative. The evening promises to be social and personally creative. We hope you’ll join us! \nClick here to reserve your free tickets.  \nIn the meantime\, check out the trailer for Sultanna is a Moroccan Jew Who Makes a Moroccan Rug. \nThis event is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, which is funded by the Quebec Community Group Network’s Community Innovation Fund. We also thank the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal (JCF) for their support.

Setel. Starting at Parc St-Viateur in Outremont\, this guided conversation will take us through the Mile End by way of the neighbourhood’s back alleys and looping paths\, ending in Champs des Possibles with complimentary snacks and beverages. Along the walk\, Iso will be sharing their research and the work that went into creating their book\, Eruv: Queer Installations of Jewish Space\, while inviting attendees to reflect upon and share their experiences in queer and Jewish spaces within and beyond Montreal. \nThis walking conversation and its associated book examine the ways in which eruvin function as queer objects\, dissolving distinctions between the public and the private\, and reconditioning spatial relations. Eruv collages together text\, photography\, and paper-cut maps of ritual terrains to articulate how eruvin might be utilized as ritual technology in projects of queer liberation and community formation. \nTickets are $12 for Students and $23 for General Admission\, plus applicable taxes. \nAbout Iso: \nIso E. Setel is a filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist based in Montreal / Tiohtiá:ke since 2017. Utilizing moving images\, text\, and textiles\, their work addresses questions of visibility\, sense and memory in documentary film and installation. Their work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Canada. In 2022 and 2023\, Iso has facilitated workshops on the Jewish art of papercutting at the Museum of Jewish Montreal. Originally from Buffalo\, New York\, Iso received a BA in Political Studies and Electronic Media Arts from Simon’s Rock in 2017\, and an MFA in Film Production from Concordia University in 2021. \nPlease note capacity is limited\, so we encourage early registration to avoid disappointment. Copies of Eruv: Notes on Queer Installations of Jewish Space will be available for purchase at the end of the walking portion\, $5 or pay-what-you-can. SUMMARY:Unpacking My Library: A Collection of Jewish Heritage
DESCRIPTION:I’ve often felt that my library explained who I was\, gave me a shifting self that transformed itself constantly throughout the years.” Alberto Mangel – Packing my Library \n  \n“Unpacking My Library: A Collection of Jewish Heritage” is an oral history project designed by Wanessa Cardoso that investigates the role of personal libraries in preserving Jewish culture\, identity and heritage. \nDuring World War II\, tens of millions of books disappeared in the Nazi plundering operations\, which destroyed not only public libraries and archives all over Europe but also personal libraries built up over generations to depict the cultural and linguistic aspects of people as individuals and communities. \nIn this event\, the public will have the opportunity to watch part of the interviews undertaken during this project and discuss with some of the participants how preserving certain documents in personal libraries (newly established or passed over generations) can contribute to safeguarding Jewish culture. This event will be a space for bibliophiles to meet and exchange personal experiences about the subject. \n  \nMeet the interviewees that will participate in the event: \n  \nCesario Lavery is an illustrator\, comics-maker\, writer\, textile dabbler and outdoor educator. Der Eydes (“The Witness”) is his ongoing serialized comic about Dr. Chaim Shatan\, Kafka\, finding treasure\, and family history/mystery. Cesario’s interests include intergenerational and mixed-level learning\, emergent pedagogy\, learning Yiddish and Judeo-Italian\, crafts of all kinds\, and storytelling in its myriad forms. \n  \nClaire Sigal is a Master’s Student at McGill University in Library Sciences\, having completed her BFA in Art History at Concordia University. When she is not researching the history of Jewish garment work in Montreal\, she is writing\, reading Yiddish poetry\, or Jewish folk dancing. \n  \ndaph is a public school educator\, community organizer\, and performing arts professional. They have been working on their home library/community project for the past few years\, to share access to books they couldn’t find in Montreal’s libraries or bookstores. Part political education\, part spiritual sustenance\, they read and share books about queer and trans-Jews\, anti-colonial Arab-Jewish histories\, and Jewish sacred texts\, among many other things. \n  \n\nSarah Deshaies is a lifelong reader and radio-maker based in Montreal. She produced an audio documentary about Chrismukkah through the support of the Museum’s micrograntee program. \n  \nThank you to the Jewish Public Library for providing their space for the filming of Unpacking My Library. \n  \nUnpacking My Library was produced under the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrants for Creative or Cultural Exploration program\, with support from the Community Innovation Fund and the Betty Averbach Family Foundation. The views and opinions expressed in this project and/or event are those of the creator(s) and do not necessarily reflect the position of the Museum of Jewish Montreal. \nThe Community Innovation Fund is financed in part by the Government of Canada’s Social Development Partnerships Program – Children and Families Component and is part of the Action Plan for Official Languages – 2018-2023: Investing in Our Future. The fund is managed by the Quebec Community Groups Network (QCGN).

SUMMARY:Red Light Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming Professor Karen Herland for another special walking tour of Montreal’s historic Red Light District! \nSex work\, especially in its most visible forms\, tends to be recognized as a problem\, requiring intervention and eradication. As a major transportation hub and port city\, many sectors of Montreal’s economy were intertwined with the sex trade\, even as police and politicians manipulated social responses (positive and negative) to the presence of a thriving Red Light District. From Maimie Pinzer to Harry Ship and through to the present day\, this tour explores the social\, economic\, labour\, cultural\, racial\, and gender history of Montreal through its former Red Light\, which for decades thrived in the heart of Montreal’s burgeoning Jewish community. \nThis tour covers 150 years and 10 city blocks over 1.5-2 hours. The tour begins on the southeast corner of Boulevard René Lévesque and Boulevard St. Laurent and ends near St. Laurent metro station. Please note that while the tour will be led in English\, questions can be asked and answered in French. \nTICKETS:\nAdults: $25\nStudents: $13\nAges 65+: $23\nAges 13-17: $13\nAges 8-12: $8\nAges 0-7: Free \nClick here to get your tickets! Space is limited so purchase early to avoid disappointment. \nWeather Policy: In the event of light rain\, the tour will go on as scheduled. If there is a strong warning of heavy rain and/or thunderstorms\, the tour will be postponed. All registrants will have the option to attend the rescheduled tour.

SUMMARY:Zine Launch | Not Going Anywhere: History and Continuity in Queer Jewish Montreal
DESCRIPTION:The LGBTQ+ relationship to history is a queer thing. Traditionally erased or purposefully redacted\, queer histories have been typically kept alive through whisper networks and\, since mid-20th century\, communal archives. But now\, queer memory can aid us to right historical wrongs\, document oral histories\, give life to dust-covered boxes lying dormant on fonds shelves. \nHistory allows us to reckon with our origins and grapple with what came before us. SUMMARY:Book Launch | In the Land of the Postscript: The Complete Short Stories of Chava Rosenfarb
DESCRIPTION:On September 13\, join us with the Yiddish Book Center for a discussion in response to In the Land of the Postscript: The Complete Short Stories of Chava Rosenfarb\, translated by Goldie Morgentaler. \nThis collection\, published by White Goat Press\, the Yiddish Book Center’s imprint\, makes available in English for the first time all of Chava Rosenfarb’s short stories in one place. Dealing with the lives of Holocaust survivors in North America\, these stories reflect Rosenfarb’s personal experiences as a Holocaust survivor who settled in Montreal while also inhabiting the minds of characters far different from herself. A discussion between Goldie Morgentaler and Sebastian Schulman will be followed by a book signing. \nTo purchase the book in advance\, visit the Yiddish Book Center’s online store. Copies will also be available for purchase at the launch. \nTo reserve your free spot at the event\, click here. \nChava Rosenfarb (1923–2011) was a major Yiddish novelist\, essayist\, short story writer\, and one of the few writers to compose Yiddish fiction about the Holocaust. Her works remain essential reading on World War II–era and postwar Jewish life. After beginning her literary career writing poetry in the Lodz Ghetto\, Rosenfarb endured Auschwitz and Bergen-Belson and lived in a displaced persons camp before settling in Montreal. \nOur Speakers: \nGoldie Morgentaler (born 1950) is a Canadian Yiddish-to-English literary translator as well as a professor of English literature. She currently holds a professorship at the University of Lethbridge\, where she teaches nineteenth-century British and American literature as well as modern Jewish literature. Morgentaler is the daughter of Holocaust survivor and Yiddish-language author Chava Rosenfarb. \nSebastian Schulman is a literary translator and an alumnus of the Yiddish Book Center. \nWhite Goat Press\, the Yiddish Book Center’s imprint\, is committed to bringing newly translated work to the widest readership possible. We publish work in all genres—novels\, short stories\, drama\, poetry\, memoirs\, essays\, reportage\, children’s literature\, plays\, and popular fiction\, including romance and detective stories. \nThis event is proudly presented by the Yiddish Book Center in partnership with the Museum of Jewish Montreal and the Jewish Public Library of Montreal.

SUMMARY:Red Light Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our last Red Light Tour of the year! Come learn about Montreal’s historic Red Light District under the guidance of Professor Karen Herland. \nClick here to reserve your spot.  \nTICKETS:\nAdults: $25\nStudents: $13\nAges 65+: $23\nAges 13-17: $13\nAges 8-12: $8\nAges 0-7: Free \nWeather Policy: In the event of light rain\, the tour will go on as scheduled. If there is a strong warning of heavy rain and/or thunderstorms\, the tour will be postponed. All registrants will have the option to attend the rescheduled tour. \n\nREAD LESS

SUMMARY:Vernissage | BACK RIVER
DESCRIPTION:On November 23\, join us for the public vernissage of BACK RIVER by Montreal-based artist Sonia Bazar. The latest exhibition at the Museum of Jewish Montreal\, BACK RIVER weaves together themes of loss\, memory\, community\, and urban landscapes\, contemplating what is forgotten\, and how it can be remembered. \nCentred upon the Back River Cemetery – one of Montreal’s oldest Jewish cemeteries\, located in Ahuntsic – this multidisciplinary body of work explores the burial ground’s peculiar and enigmatic place in our city’s landscape. Bazar’s work ruminates on the challenges of solving the puzzle surrounding the cemetery’s founding\, evolution\, and near-abandonment. With the artist’s own family members buried at the Back River\, piecing together knowledge of this space becomes an act of personal archiving and placemaking. However\, absence and scarcity of information about the Back River Cemetery remain a core part of its story and the memory of its occupants.Through research-creation using archival sources and oral histories\, Bazar invites us to become part of the cemetery’s contemporary archive as she reimagines its 140-year history through photography\, installation\, and sculptural work. \nOpening remarks by the curator and the artist will take place at 8:00pm. \nKindly note that pre-registration is required for all who wish to attend. Click here to register in advance. \nA bar (payable by card only) will be open with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage options. Complimentary refreshments provided by Violet Bakehouse will also be available. \nACCESSIBILITY: Please note that the Museum of Jewish Montreal is currently not accessible to visitors with limited mobility. This exhibition takes place on the second and third floors of our building\, accessible by staircase. Our ground floor entrance is accessible by ramp.  \nSonia Bazar and the Museum of Jewish Montreal would like to acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Soul Candles: Ancestral Practice and Candle Crafting
DESCRIPTION:On February 18\, join us for a candle-making workshop that explores participatory ritual\, tradition\, and ancestral connection. \nFacilitated by artist Sof Kreidstein\, this creative workshop is focused on the old Ashkenazi custom of making soul candles out of beeswax. This centuries-old practice\, called feldmestn (Yiddish) was carried out by women in Eastern Europe who would measure the graves of their ancestors with wick thread\, making candles as a connective channel between the dead and the living. \nDuring the workshop\, guests will learn all about this ancestral practice\, and will be invited to engage in open discussion about themes related to ancestral connection. Guests will also be encouraged to consider the thematic overlaps between this workshop and our ongoing exhibition\, BACK RIVER by Sonia Bazar\, which contemplates loss and memory in the context of Montreal’s Back River Cemetery. \nAll participants will come away with a hand-made beeswax candle (or a few!)\, incorporating a wick imbued with intention\, as well as a candleholder made from a found object. Guests are encouraged to bring a stone for their candleholder\, but we will have extras provided. \nTickets to this workshop are $30 plus tax\,. and include all materials needed to make the candle. Pre-registration is required for all who wish to attend. Capacity is limited\, so sign up early to avoid disappointment. \nClick here to reserve your spot.  \nABOUT SOF: \nSof Kreidstein is an interdisciplinary artist and facilitator\, who creates/transforms through object making\, installation art\, performance\, poetry\, digital media\, and socially engaged projects. Their multifaceted practice is guided by interconnections in nature\, queer ritual\, Jewish mysticism and folklore\, neurodivergent intuition\, and intergenerationality. Sof is based in Tkaronto\, having recently moved back from Kjipuktuk where they lived during and following their time at NSCAD (BFA 2022). \nTheir work has evolved through solo and collaborative exhibitions\, land-based projects\, and public art festivals. As a facilitator and organizer\, their work is centred around queer and trans Jewish community and youth\, and cultivating accessible spaces for creative expression. Sof is driven to nurture growth through connection\, care\, and curiosity. \nACCESSIBILITY: Please note that the upper levels of our building are not currently accessible to visitors with limited mobility. This workshop will take place on the ground level. Our exhibition space is located on the upper levels.

SUMMARY:Doikayt\, On Being Here and Loving It: A Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Not tired yet of the back-and-forth thinking about what it means to be Jewish? Looking for connections with other “not Jewish enough\,” “Jew-ish\,” or “WIP” Jews? Well\, this writing workshop might be just what you need. \nFacilitated by Karl Ponthieux Stern\, one of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s (MJM) microgrant recipients\, Doikayt\, on being here and loving it is an interactive writing workshop dedicated to the complexities of navigating diasporic Jewishness. Meaning “hereness” or “diasporism\,” the Yiddish term doikayt refers to how Jewish communities are strengthened wherever they may be. Centred upon creating a community around the idea of “hereness” and sharing our experiences on Jewish Montreal\, participants will discover Karl´s zine\, and will be invited to participate in writing activities. The workshop will include some time to share our writing and/or experiences. Karl’s zine is written in English\, but since Karl is a native French speaker\, this event will be bilingual. Join us with Karl for an evening of thinking\, fun\, and community. \nThe workshop will run from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Snacks and tea will be provided\, as well as a free copy of the zine for each participant. Pre-registration for this workshop is required for all who wish to attend. Limited capacity\, so please register early to avoid disappointment. \nClick here to reserve your free spot. \nABOUT KARL: \nKarl is a Montreal-based writer\, trans gay activist\, and history student. They started their research activities way before university\, by documenting medical violence against women\, trans men\, and non-binary people in France. They also led a self-educated research on Jewish Women in leftist organizations\, for the revolutionary Jewish organization JJR. Karl´s hunger for knowledge\, social justice\, and Jewish culture has made them passionate about Yiddish revival and secular Jewish culture. They sometimes bridge all the sides of themselves in cross-stitching embroideries that they showcase along with their partner’s artwork on @gertyshop. \nKarl holds a degree in History from the University of Paris Nanterre (2022). Their M.A. thesis at Concordia University focuses on an Oral History of the ExisTransInter\, a yearly demonstration led by trans activists since 1997. Karl currently serves on the Mile End Chavurah´s board of directors. \nThis is an independent project developed through the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrants for Creative and Cultural Exploration Program. This program is made possible through the support of the Averbach Family Foundation\, the Morris and Rosalind Goodman Family Foundation\, Federation CJA’s Working Together Grant\, The Azrieli Foundation\, and CANVAS.

SUMMARY:Jewish Herbalism: Our Roots and Rituals
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered about the connections between plants and Jewish rituals? \nTo kick off spring\, join us with Celia Robinovitch for an interactive workshop about Jewish herbalism. A part of our Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, this workshop will look at the plants central to Jewish traditions\, culture\, and healing methods. This interactive workshop will give participants a chance to play with (and take home!) a colorful variety of dried herbs and spices while learning about their historical uses in Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jewish communities. \nHerbalism grants people the knowledge and tools to utilize natural resources in their local environment to support their health and wellness. Sharing information about Jewish plant rituals and historic herbal traditions is particularly important for Jews in the diaspora because it grants us tools to reclaim ancestral practices and connect with the local environment\, thus fostering community resilience and bodily sovereignty for a people who have a long history of exile\, persecution and cultural erasure. \nParticipants will each create besamim pouches\, an aromatic container used during the Havdalah service\, using herbs that are traditionally significant in Jewish culture\, medicine and rituals. This activity is child-friendly\, and open to all ages! \nPlease note that this event is free and capacity is limited. Pre-registration is required for all who wish to attend. Click here to reserve your ticket.  \nABOUT CELIA: \nCelia Robinovitch is a Montreal-based social worker\, herbalist and DJ. She holds a bachelor’s in social work from McGill and completed the City Herbal Apprenticeship Program at Loyola this past summer. Celia has worked extensively in community outreach\, harm reduction\, and urban agriculture. She currently works at Santropol Roulant on the Meals on Wheels team\, and spends her free time DJing and learning more about Jewish herbalism traditions in hopes of integrating her Jewish heritage with her love for plants and accessible healthcare. \nAccessibility: Please note that the upper levels of our building ore only accessible via staircase. This workshop will take place on the ground level. \nThis is an independent project developed through the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s Microgrants for Creative and Cultural Exploration Program. SUMMARY:Chapbook Launch: Minder by Madelaine Caritas Longman
DESCRIPTION:Poetry presents a unique opportunity to tap into our inner experiences and better understand ourselves and each other. In acknowledging differences yet bringing people together\, poems can offer a window into nuanced experiences of spirituality\, cultural identity\, neurodiversity\, mental health\, and the intricate relationships between these. Poetry can foster empathy\, embrace variation\, and let us know we’re not alone. \nOn April 18\, you are invited to join us for the launch of Madelaine Caritas Longman’s chapbook\, Minder\, featuring a poetry reading by Madelaine Caritas Longman\, David B. Goldstein and Melanie Power. Arising from the author’s lived experience\, Minder explores the nuances of life as a neurodivergent queer Jewish person: how can one build a spiritual practice when one struggles with compulsive prayer? What might community mean to a person on the autism spectrum? How can we hold space for the many possibilities of what neurodiversity\, Judaism\, and poetry can be? \nJoin us at 7:00 pm at the Museum of Jewish Montreal for an evening of poetry\, food and drink\, and stimulating discussion. \nPlease note that pre-registration is required for all who wish to attend. Click here to reserve your spot.  \nAbout Our Speakers: \nMadelaine Caritas Longman is the author of The Danger Model (McGill-Queen’s University Press\, 2019)\, which received the Quebec Writers Federation’s Concordia University First Book Prize and was longlisted for the Fred Cogswell Award for Excellence in Poetry. She holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Humanities from Concordia University.  \nDavid B. Goldstein is an award-winning poet\, critic\, and food writer\, whose work has appeared in magazines and newspapers across Canada and the US. He is the author of two books of poetry\, Lost Originals (2016) and Laws of Rest (2013)\, both published by Book*Hug. He teaches in the English Department at York University and coordinates its Creative Writing Program. \nMelanie Power is the author of Full Moon of Afraid and Craving (McGill-Queen’s University Press\, 2022)\, a book that considers place\, family\, and belonging.
