SUMMARY:Darkroom by Edward Hillel
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Museum of Jewish Montreal is thrilled to present Chambre Noire/Darkroom\, an immersive art installation by photographer and multidisciplinary artist Edward Hillel. Using archives from his critically-acclaimed 1987 book The Main: Portrait of a Neighbourhood\, the artist invites the public into the intimate setting of a figurative darkroom\, offering a glimpse into his creative process while reflecting on time\, memory and photographic practice. Darkroom/Chambre Noire will run from June 26th until September 15th\, 2019. \nThe Museum of Jewish Montreal\, a contemporary cultural hub and meeting point for the diverse communities that have lived and now reside along the Main\, is a fitting location for Hillel’s Chambre Noire/Darkroom. The Museum’s gallery space will be transformed into an imaginary darkroom production space\, bringing together large-scale black and white film strips\, never-before-seen contact sheets\, physical and virtual copies of The Main\, as well as a monumental participatory map that engages visitors to explore\, connect their own dots and share their own stories. At night\, the exhibition will come further to life as the red lights of the darkroom beckon mysteriously out from the Museum’s fourteen large windows towards the boulevard at the corner of St-Laurent and Duluth. \nHillel’s installation is further informed by site-specificity as he pays homage to the history and processes of analog photography\, and to this former factory building where MJM is located. After the end of textile manufacturing in the 60’s\, the building languished until it was purchased by a co-operative of creatives. Since then it has housed many photographers\, filmmakers and artists who make a vibrant contribution to the cultural life of the city\, the province as well as internationally. No doubt some dark rooms still thrive here. \n[slide-anything id=”37684″] \nBorn in Baghdad\, Iraq\, Hillel grew up in Montreal where he lived and worked as a community organizer in the Plateau neighbourhood between 1975 and 1990 while developing his artistic practice. His social activism and involvement in community life inspired him to document this transitional moment through photography and text. In 1990 Hillel moved from Montreal to Paris and is now based in New York. In 2017 the Société de Developpement du Boulevard St. Laurent commissioned him to revisit The Main and create a new body of work\, due to be published soon. \nChambre Noir/Darkroom is featured as part of the Museum’s 2018-2019 exhibition series Movement & Migrations\, which places importance on sharing stories different than our own\, while encouraging recognition of ourselves in the stories of others. In collaborating with Hillel\, the Museum of Jewish Montreal is fulfilling its goal in creating multiple entry points for visitors to engage with and find personal resonance in Montreal’s Jewish heritage and its diverse communities through art\, as well as creating an inclusive space for visitors of all backgrounds to learn\, participate and exchange ideas.

SUMMARY:Klezmer on the Main: Outdoor Concert & Street Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join us and KlezKanada in welcoming Moritz Weiss and Ivan Trenev from Austria for a free outdoor klezmer concert during the Labour Day weekend street fair along Boulevard St. Laurent! \nFrom 1-2 PM on Sunday September 1 we’ll have live music right outside our Museum (corner of Duluth and St. Laurent)\, and from Thursday-Sunday we’ll be out from 11:30-6:30 PM with our booth selling delightful gifts from our boutique and refreshing snacks from Fletchers – Espace Culinaire. \nDuo Trenev & Weiß‘s project\, “Kleztango and Beyond“\, is a duo project featuring two best friends in world music entering into a musical dialogue on the clarinet and accordion. The accordion supports the laughing\, sighing\, and cawing sounds of the clarinet with soft\, crystal clear sounds and rhythmically playful melodies. Trenev and Weiß devote themselves to two wonderful musical varieties – Tango and Klezmer – and playfully sculpt out their commonalities. In April 2019 their debut album “KlezTango“ was released on Lotus Records.

SUMMARY:Red Light Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming Karen Herland for a special walking tour of Montreal’s historic Red Light District! \nSex work\, especially in its most visible forms\, tends to be recognized as a problem\, requiring intervention and eradication. As a major transportation hub and port city\, many sectors of Montreal’s economy were intertwined with the sex trade\, even as police and politicians manipulated social responses (positive and negative) to the presence of a thriving Red Light District. From Maimie Pinzer to Harry Ship and through to the present day\, this tour explores the social\, economic\, labour\, cultural\, racial\, and gender history of Montreal through its former Red Light\, which for decades thrived in the heart of Montreal’s burgeoning Jewish community. \nThis tour covers 150 years and 10 city blocks over 1.5-2 hours. The tour begins on the southeast corner of Boulevard René Lévesque and Boulevard St. Laurent and ends near St. Laurent metro station. The tour will be taking place in English. \nTickets are $21 general admission and $10 for students. Spots are limited\, and tickets can be purchased only in advance using this link: https://kiosk.eztix.co/kiosk-optimised/1262428 \nKaren Herland is an author\, independent researcher\, and educator\, currently teaching at Concordia University in the Interdisciplinary Program on Sexuality Studies and Fine Arts. She published “People\, Potholes and City Politics”\, a guide to municipal politics in Montreal in 1994 with Black Rose Books. She began researching the history of Montreal’s Red Light District after working as coordinator for Stella\, a community development organization for sex workers in Montreal. \n

SUMMARY:Iraqi Jewish Voices
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Museum of Jewish Montreal in collaboration with Sephardi Voices proudly presents IRAQI JEWISH VOICES\, a multimedia exhibition and exploration of the last generation of Iraqi-born Jews. \n  \nPlaced in the context of 2500 years of Jewish life in Iraq\, this exhibition focuses on the 1930s to 1970s\, when state-sanctioned discrimination\, violence\, and political unrest saw Iraqi Jews leave en masse\, many as refugees. The exhibition presents portraits\, oral histories\, archival images as well as a video projection highlighting the underrepresented history of Iraqi or Babylonian Jews\, a vibrant -and now exiled -community whose love for their country persisted even as they were forced to leave. \n  \nThe vernissage\, taking place on Sunday\, September 22\, 2019 at 6pm\, is free and open to the public. The short film Last Class in Baghdad\, produced by Sephardi Voices\, will be screened during the vernissage. Click here to RSVP. \n  \nAbout Sephardi Voices \nSephardi Voices is the first comprehensive digital archive that documents and preserves the life stories of Jews who lived in North Africa and the Middle East with videos\, audio\, and photographs. Sephardi Voices was founded and is led by International Director Dr. Henry Green and David Langer. Dr. Green is Professor\, Religious Studies at the University of Miami and is the Founding Director of MOSAIC: The Jewish Museum of Florida. Langer is an award-winning writer-producer-director with over forty years of television experience. \n  \nThis exhibition has been made possible by the generous contribution of the Victor and Edna Mashaal Foundation\, Senvest Capital\, and the support of the Community of Babylonian and Iraqi Jews of Montreal and the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal. \nThe exhibit is an outgrowth of the Iraqi Jewish Voices project launched by Robert Shasha and Dennis Shasha\, and spearheaded by Tamar Morad\, based on their oral history collection of Iraqi Jews.
