Beth Israel and Shmuel

Beth Israel and Samuel was incorporated in 1925 and, like many of the smaller immigrant congregations, residential units were simply converted to serve as a synagogue. Its earliest location was at 3732 De Bullion. Following its members as they moved somewhat northward, the synagogue was re-established at 5424 Jeanne Mance before 1954. Beth Israel and Samuel was the last of four congregations to form the Zichron Kedoshim congregation on 5212 Westbury after 1965.

An invitation to a general meeting to be held at the synagogue on 3732 De Bullion on November 18, 1934 was typical in format and content. The invitation is addressed to a “Worthy Brother.” The meeting would consist of the presentation of last year’s financial report, installation of the officers for the coming year, and other “important” business. As is typical in the format of these invitations, the bottom line indicated the member’s outstanding debt.
