Story

Listen to Rabbi Wilfred Shuchat, the creator and program chairman of the Pavilion of Judaism at Expo 67, discuss his experience working on the unparalleled pavilion that attracted 3 million visitors. Born in Montreal in 1920, Rabbi Shuchat graduated from McGill University in 1941, and was subsequently ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1945, which awarded him a D.D. in 1971. He became the rabbi of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim in Montreal in 1948, and served as the synagogue's rabbi until 1993, when he retired and became rabbi emeritus. Rabbi Shuchat also co-founded the Board of Jewish Ministers of Greater Montreal (now the Board of Rabbis) in 1947, he served as chairman of the Religious Welfare Committee of the Canadian Jewish Congress, he set up the De Sola Club in 1960, and he was one of the original founders of the Union for Traditional Judaism (UTJ). Rabbi Shuchat is also the author of several influential books, including "The Gate of Heaven: The Story of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim in Montreal" (2000) and "The Creation According to Midrash Rabbah" (2002). This interview was conducted by Jacob Heisler.
