How Does An Archive Breathe? A Look Inside the Jewish Museum Berlin

Sun May 5 @ 13:00 - 15:00

Join us on Sunday, May 5 for a special look inside the holdings of the Jewish Museum Berlin, presented by head archivist Aubrey Pomerance.

The Jewish Museum Berlin is one of the outstanding institutions on the European museum landscape. The family collections that have been donated to the museum by German Jewish families and their descendants from around the world offer a fascinating insight into almost all aspects of Jewish life in Germany: religious practice, family life and celebrations, education, military service, professional and economic life, community life, relationships with non-Jews, migration and emigration, the fates of individuals and families during the Nazi era, life in exile, remigration and life in post-war Germany.

Aubrey Pomerance will present examples from various collections spanning numerous centuries and elucidate the various ways that the holdings are utilized: for display in the permanent and temporary exhibitions, in online features devoted to diverse historical eras and topics, in archival workshops with high school and university students, and for research by students and scholars from a wide range of disciplines.

Light refreshments will be provided following the presentation.

Click here to reserve your spot. Please note that capacity is limited and pre-registration is required for all who wish to attend.

This event is generously supported by the German Consulate in Montreal and presented in partnership with the Goethe Institute and the Montreal Holocaust Museum.

Aubrey Pomerance is the Head of Archives at the Jewish Museum Berlin. Born in Calgary, Alberta, he studied Jewish Studies and History at the Freie Universität Berlin. There he was a research assistant at the Institut für Judaistik in 1995 and 1996 and thereafter at the Salomon Ludwig Steinheim Institut for German Jewish history in Duisburg. He was part of the curatorial team that put together the new permanent exhibition of the Jewish Museum Berlin that opened in 2020, co-curating the segment devoted to the lives and fates of Jews in Germany during the period of National Socialism and the digital wall presenting family collections. He has written on Jewish memorial culture, Jewish photographers in Berlin, and Jewish life in Nazi Germany.
