Inside the Yiddish School: Historic Building Tour Launch
Sat February 1, 2020 @ 15:45 - 17:45
Travel back in time to the 1940s and 50s to visit a Yiddish institution that helped shape Jewish identity in Montreal – the Peretz Shule. Telling the story through the eyes of several students who attended the school, our new tour takes a closer look at the history of Montreal’s vibrant Yiddish community, and the importance the school held for those living in the neighbourhood now called the Plateau. What was taught there? What challenges did the students and teachers face? How did the school impact the broader community? Join us to explore how the Peretz Shule was more than just a school, and how Yiddish was more than just a language.
This tour is delivered in partnership with the Maison de l’amitié, a community centre (in the former Peretz Shule building) dedicated to promoting social integration of immigrants and reducing cultural and linguistic divisions within the community.
