Mitten Making Workshop with Helen Frank

Thu February 5 @ 17:30 - 20:30

Join us with Helen Frank for a mitten making workshop using upcycled wool sweaters!

Come upcycle wool clothing and chat with Helen about the history of the textile industry in Montreal and its strong connection to the Jewish community. The workshop will begin with a brief presentation on the shmata (garment) industry, followed by learning how to hand sew a pair of mittens using secondhand sweaters. Sweaters will be provided, along with a mitten pattern in 3 sizes, and we will be starting with how to thread a needle. More experienced sewists may also adorn their mittens with embroidery thread, buttons, or other embellishments. No prior sewing experience required! All levels welcome.

$30 per person. All materials provided. Click here to reserve your spot.

Helen Frank has been sewing professionally for 7 years and privately for 22. She combined her love of sewing and her passion for environmentalism when starting her business, La Fixerie Couture (First known as “Helen Mends”). Helen repairs textiles, alters clothing, and has a line of products made from upcycled fabrics to replace disposable items. She would be happy to answer all your mending questions through her Instagram or her website.

Accessibility: This workshop will take place at H. Fisher & Fils (4129 St. Laurent Boulevard). Please note that this building is not accessible to visitors with limited mobility. The workshop will take place on the second floor, accessible by staircase only.
