The Museum of Jewish Montreal – an innovative place to connect with Montreal’s diverse Jewish life and heritage through new arts and cultural experiences – is seeking a qualified post-secondary graduate to take a leading role in our ongoing growing heritage projects.

We are currently in the research, development, and public activation phase of a new public history site, H. Fisher & Fils, a 100-year-old garment industry supply store that operated from 1918 to 2022 and remains the last of its kind in Montreal’s historic Jewish neighbourhood along Saint-Laurent Boulevard. Open to the public since June 2025, H. Fisher & Fils now operates as a satellite heritage site welcoming visitors through guided tours, public programs, and community engagement activities focused on Montreal’s garment industry and its deep connections to Jewish immigration and labour history.

The Community Engagement and Digital Heritage Coordinator will act as an ambassador for this experiential heritage site, playing an active role in its continued development while gaining hands-on experience across multiple Museum departments, including heritage research, exhibitions and curation, operations, community engagement, and digital heritage. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to on-site and online public history programming as well as the Museum’s broader heritage preservation initiatives.

The ideal candidate will be eager to immerse themselves in innovative public history, heritage conservation practices, and community-engaged research, and will be motivated to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders: Museum staff, community members, researchers, and visitors to inform the ongoing evolution of the H. Fisher & Fils site.

During the contract, the Community Engagement and Digital Heritage Coordinator will:

  • Contribute to the maintenance, organization, and quality control of the Museum’s growing online collections while gaining hands-on experience in digital heritage workflows, and play an active role in shaping the Museum’s future digital heritage initiatives.
  • Assist the Visitor Services and Heritage Projects Coordinator in the day-to-day operations of our outdoor guided walking tours, including making public and private tours bookings, communicating with customers and external suppliers, and scheduling staff.
  • Learn, deliver, and refine guided tours on the H. Fisher building and its history, while working closely with the Research Manager, Programming Team, and Visitor Services and Heritage Projects Coordinator to update interpretive offerings, support the training of summer fellows, and help ensure visitors are welcomed into the space and provided with meaningful context on the building, the Museum’s mandate, the surrounding neighbourhood, and the city.
  • Participate in the Museum’s research fellowship learning sessions and group discussions on Montreal’s Jewish History, the H. Fisher building, the garment industry, and public history methodologies.
  • Complete training in preservation housekeeping for heritage sites and small museums, and develop recommendations and best practices, contributing to the Museum’s growing expertise in heritage interiors and historic sites.
  • Contribute to the internal reporting, recommendations, and future work planning for the H. Fisher & Fils site, in collaboration with the Museum’s Research, Programming, and Curatorial teams.
  • Be available to work weekends throughout the summer (May – August)

CANDIDATE PROFILE

In addition to on-site heritage work, the Community Engagement and Digital Heritage Coordinator will support the Museum’s digital heritage and collections initiatives, assisting with the maintenance and organization of oral histories, archival images, and research content published through the Museum’s online collections platform. This work contributes to the long-term sustainability, accessibility, and ethical presentation of the Museum’s broader Jewish heritage materials.

This position is intended to foster the professional development of an emerging heritage professional interested in pursuing a career in museums, heritage sites, libraries or archives, digital humanities, or other cultural heritage organizations. Candidates should have academic or professional experience with heritage project management, AND/OR a relevant

educational background in Museum and Curatorial Studies, Public History, Anthropology, Canadian Studies, Information and Library Sciences, Québec Studies, Jewish Studies, or other heritage-related fields.

While not required, an ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience working with and managing people from prior customer or community service experience
  • Enjoy engaging with diverse audiences in a welcoming and educational environment
  • Have experience with coordinating and planning public-facing programs or events
  • Be comfortable both working independently and collaboratively
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving, public speaking, and research skills

Because the Museum is located in Montreal, fluency in both French and English is strongly preferred, and the successful candidate will be comfortable working in a bilingual office environment. Proficiency with Zoom, Google Suite, Microsoft Suite (in particular Word and Excel), and proficiency in learning new digital tools will be required; prior knowledge of WordPress, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, audio/video editing software, and CRMs is an asset.
