Iraqi Jewish Voices

Sun September 22, 2019 - Sun October 20, 2019

The Museum of Jewish Montreal in collaboration with Sephardi Voices proudly presents IRAQI JEWISH VOICES, a multimedia exhibition and exploration of the last generation of Iraqi-born Jews.

Placed in the context of 2500 years of Jewish life in Iraq, this exhibition focuses on the 1930s to 1970s, when state-sanctioned discrimination, violence, and political unrest saw Iraqi Jews leave en masse, many as refugees. The exhibition presents portraits, oral histories, archival images as well as a video projection highlighting the underrepresented history of Iraqi or Babylonian Jews, a vibrant -and now exiled -community whose love for their country persisted even as they were forced to leave.

The vernissage, taking place on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at 6pm, is free and open to the public. The short film Last Class in Baghdad, produced by Sephardi Voices, will be screened during the vernissage. Click here to RSVP.

About Sephardi Voices

Sephardi Voices is the first comprehensive digital archive that documents and preserves the life stories of Jews who lived in North Africa and the Middle East with videos, audio, and photographs. Sephardi Voices was founded and is led by International Director Dr. Henry Green and David Langer. Dr. Green is Professor, Religious Studies at the University of Miami and is the Founding Director of MOSAIC: The Jewish Museum of Florida. Langer is an award-winning writer-producer-director with over forty years of television experience.

This exhibition has been made possible by the generous contribution of the Victor and Edna Mashaal Foundation, Senvest Capital, and the support of the Community of Babylonian and Iraqi Jews of Montreal and the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal.

The exhibit is an outgrowth of the Iraqi Jewish Voices project launched by Robert Shasha and Dennis Shasha, and spearheaded by Tamar Morad, based on their oral history collection of Iraqi Jews.
