A Tale of Two Bagels: Tasting Montreal and New York’s Best

Thu August 4, 2022 @ 18:00 - 20:00

Montreal and New York are known for their countless contributions to Jewish food and culture. Their bagels – though sometimes a point of competition between the two cities – stand out as delicious symbols for generations of Jewish migration, settlement, and imagination. A Tale of Two Bagels: Tasting Montreal and New York’s Best will be a unique opportunity to learn about, explore, and – most importantly – to sink our teeth into the legacy of the bagel as it relates to each city’s Jewish cultural and culinary identity.

We will be joined by food historians and activists Sari Kamin (MOFAD, New York) and Kat Romanow (The Wandering Chew, Montreal) who will discuss what makes each city’s bagel so beloved and how they came to be. We will also hear from Montreal’s foremost bagel makers about their connections to our cities’ beloved baked goods, and all guests will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A following the discussion.

Throughout the evening, visitors will be invited to try complimentary samples of bagels – and bagel-related treats – from Montreal favourites including St-Viateur BagelBagels le TrouLes GivrésZaidie’s Smoked Salmon, and Shelsky’s of Brooklyn. House-made cocktails will be available featuring ingredients from Le Seltzer and Cirka Distilleries.

Join us in our new space on St-Laurent for a night of noshing, drinking, and schmoozing about one of our favourite foods. And just for the record, this is not a competition – you can be your own judge on that one!

All tickets ($10 plus tax) include complimentary food samples from our guest vendors.

Her background includes an MA in Judaic studies and food studies, a position as the Director of Food programming at the Museum of Jewish Montreal, where she created the walking tour Beyond the Bagel, and ran a restaurant that served modern Jewish food.
